Even if he did do this quietly, nobody would ever know about it, therefore nothing would be fixed.

Now that everbody DOES know about it, it WILL be fixed. Even at his expense, and he declared that from the beginning that he was ready to take the consequences.

He knew what he was doing and did it anyway.

The courts be damned. Since when did the courts care about truth and justice anyway?

His act is not treasonous by any legal US definition of the word. At the worst, he publicized classified information and his intent was definitely for the betrement of the country. That would not even be defined as espionage, in all likelyhood.

That is why I said that I think he meant well for what he did, but still, if one single US Coast Guard vessel was or is attacked by a foriegn land or by some terrorist group that saw this video then he could be tried for being a treasonist. I served in the Navy and I held a clearance that forbids me to tell anyone else for the rest of my life anything that I know that is still considered to be classified information. To do so would breach my clearance and I could be charged with and tried with being a "treasonist". This guy most likely had or has a clearance of some sort that he swore under oath to uphold and abide by considering the information that he knows. For him to tell the world about secretive information is a bit concerning considering he did not use proper channels to get his message out and he did this all on his own. To say there was no other way for this guy to get the message out is being foolish in it's purest form. He wants to be looked at as another Erin Brockovich, instead to me, he looks like a fool that should end up in Federal prison or deported to some country that will take him.
Also note:
He claims that he cares so much for the safety of the crewmen and women aboard those ships yet he puts them at a much greater risk due to his lack of respect for the clearance that he supposedly holds. In other words, this guy needs to shut the hell up!

There was nothing secretive about what he said.
The guy went through his chain and got blown off. He had a lot of balls to do what he did. You talk as if he should of kept quite and let the deficiencies stand.

I am not saying that he should have let the problems stand the way they are, but I know from serving in the military that there are more quiet ways to get things done. Usually going to the legal department at any base would be a good start. Getting a lawyer to represent you and your case, and have it presented to the proper people with the power to do something about it. If he did that and the board decided to still not address the problem, then there must be a good reason for it since a board of several high ranking or political party members would not usually put their service men and women in harms way no matter what the costs were to fix it. The US government would rather spend ALL its money to save face than to have some foriegn or terrorist group get a hold of that ship or destroy it.

This idiot just went all out and pressed the "nuke" button in a way to get his message out. His message has obviously gotten out to people that don't need to know this stuff. Terrorist organizations for instance and other countries. The information he spoke of had to be classified considering he talked about the defensive weakness of the US Coast Guard and their boats. In doing what he did, he has put those service men and women at risk until the "problem" can be properly resolved. I don't understand how you don't see that? This is not some problem with a toy that could potentially kill your child if it gets swallowed. Using youtube.com might be a good place for something like that if the toy manufacturer didn't address and resolve the problem with a proper "recall".

What he did is like telling a guy you are about to get into a fight with, not to kick you in your shins, because that is your weak spot knowing you would lose the fight if he did that to you. Why wouldn't he? He's in the fight to win, so why wouldn't he take advantage of your stupidity for telling him your weakness?

Or showing a dog a hole under your backyard fence for him to easily escape from. What would be the point of having the fence then?

I can't stand idiots like that! It's people like that who don't think that worry me. He obviously acted on a 'bad day' or some emotional defect he has. Why people like him have such important National security positions is beyond me. Where does HR for the US government find these people?

Who was the idiot that took home and made a copy on their own personal CD-ROM of my crucially important social security number as well as many other veterans at the Veternan Affairs (VA) Office a few months back?

I received a letter 2 months ago stating that the VA is doing everything to "protect" me and my family from potential hacking into my banking account, credit reports, etc. This is complete B.S.! Not only is the current US president a complete moron but so are half of his junior employees.

None of what you state changes the fact that this guy is guilty of breaching a security clearance by blabbering his mouth off without premission to the world about potential weaknesses of US Coast Guard boats.

A military member would not be allowed to just go talk to the media without having first gone through his or her public affairs officer (PAO). To do so, could land that military member in the stockade or brig! Granted this guy isn't a military member, but he is still under an oath to support and defend the United States if he has any work to do with the US government and holds a secuirty clearance.

This guy really needs his rear handed to him. I say, Lock'm in the stocks and have people throw rotten fruit and vegtables at him for a week or two.
