i will try to make a few screenies, there are some things which are very impressive! and those things show exactly why AOD is the best subsim of all times...
Yup! I've been playing AOD with dosbox for a few weeks now...that subsim rocks
This one is my favorite audio
" On the surface captain, now running on diesle engines. "

i found the manual again and after a few pages i downloaded the DosBox and installed it... AOD works ok, but didnt managed it to get sound... anyway, its amazing what they managed to do back in 1994! the KI etc. is better as the one in SH3 too. thats embarresing, dont you think? graphic of SH3 with the features from AOD+SH1 = perfect subsim!
Yup. I have Downloaded my Copy from someware, and i played it till i got SH3. With all the Trix AOD teached me (And wich didn't helped much in AOD) i could Fake the SH3 Destroyers to no end. They are just too Stupid...

Today everyone just tries to get the best graphics and forgets the rest about it...

Und nochwas: Im englischen schreibt man es "AI" statt "KI".
AI, of course, oopsie :rotfl:

anyway, just started a AOD career today...and get sunk at the first patrol! damn. BDU said i shall patrol at AM32. after arriving and getting bored over there another sub send a message:

U42, BE3535, DESTROYERS, SINKING!

wow...shocking, because if you get a message in AOD you know it happens. few hours later i received another message, convoy sighted AMXXXX. after hours at AK my crew spotted smoke at the horizon (at 30.000! (meters i guess). it ws getting dark (perfect) and i tried to get into the heavy guarded (5 escorts in 39!) convoy from behind. just as i thought "ok, 1000m more and i will fire my torps..." a destryoer was heading towards me. dived to P-depth, firing 2 torps. 1 dud, 1 hit, but not sunk. destroyer is pinging me, set depth to 160m, silent running, ruder hard Bb to 350° 2nd destroyer coming my way, the first one drops a lot of well placed DC´s - scree´n is shaking, several damage reports of all kinds! (diesel damaged, pumps damaged, torphatches damaged etc. etc. not so boring like in SH3. and the repair of the diesel would take 47hours! (hours me and my crew dont have...).

my CE told me that he has trouble to maintain depth, so i get on 120m, the frst escort was turning, the second just arrived at the scene and drops DC´s too. well placed again, but no more damage at all. i took my eyes off the screen for maybe 20 seconds... after that i saw a black screen. huh, whats happened? a newspaper appeard - "Oberleutnant Kerber sunk!"

oopsie...

i wish the destroyers would kick a$$ like this in sh3

Well I don't want to compare destroyer AI, because I hear some people say SHIII AI is dumb and others that it's uber...

But I will tell you something that happaned to me last night in AOD.

I was in a Type II, spotted a convoy and reported it to Bdu.
Then slowly, one radio message after another, hour after hour different U-boats were reporting in!

The wolfpack was litterally gathering around this convoy.

I was out of torpedos so left the area, but then I heard distant explosions... I guess that was the wolfpack attacking!

"Bloody Good AI"? You mean the one that automatically sends the destroyers back to you any time you go to high Time Compression? The one that lets you stay at periscope depth and 'dogfight' with destroyers?

I love SHI, but let's not forget it's failings. AOD did indeed have wonderful AI, SHI no.

Another 'good' thing from SHI: chasing a lone tanker with your deck gun only to have your sub automatically start turning back because you had reached the edge of your patrol zone.
