OT but I'm so stoked !!!!
OMG after endless tries I have actually got SILENT HUNTER(The very first) to work on my comp Windows XP SP2. And after playing a few of the single missions realised just how Bloody good the AI is on this game, pity it could not be ported over to SH3!!!
Oh yeah and this is SH v 1.31 with all the realism mods installed, I'm a very happy dude right now    Deep Six |
SH1, you mean .. like the one for DOS?
How'd you manage that? i still have that game, plus the expansions tucked away in a box. If SH1 has better AI then SH3, that is a crying shame. AI in this game sucks. I mean, it really sucks. May as well be playing an interactive screen saver. |
Yes, I got the original SH to run on my computer a couple of years ago, using information at this website: http://www.subsowespac.org/sh_xp/silent_hunterxp.shtml
Hope this helps anyone else who wants to do the same! |
funny, i tried a old one to today -> Aces of the Deep!
i found the manual again and after a few pages i downloaded the DosBox and installed it... AOD works ok, but didnt managed it to get sound... anyway, its amazing what they managed to do back in 1994! the KI etc. is better as the one in SH3 too. thats embarresing, dont you think? graphic of SH3 with the features from AOD+SH1 = perfect subsim! |
Yeppers the ORIGINAL dos game but unlike KL Seestern I have SP2 installed so I went to this page : http://www.subsowespac.org/silent-hunter-dosbox.shtml
Which also explains installing using Dos Box, but also using another free software called Defend to open the game, I found this method MUCH easier than just using Dos Box And Yes AI from SH1+CAOD put SH3 to shame. Nippelspanner yes that is a problem installing CAOD with Dos Box is that you loose the sound, maybe if you google enough you might come up with a solution   |
What exactly makes the AI in those games so superior to SH3?
|
Havent played the older ones in years, but id hazzard a guess in saying that in those older the games, the AI acutally can find you for starters, and then goes after your ass with gusto!
In SH3, your biggest threat (if you want to call it that without modification to make them tougher) is aircraft. |
SH1 :o :D Hell i enjoyed this i remeber the rescue missions of having to pick up pilots. I wonder if these type of missions are going to be in SH4 :hmm:
|
Funny thing is that the most common complaint about SH11 was that the AI DD's could find you every time and kill you like you had a bullseye on your back.
Having spent some time on Projekt Messerwhatitsname I understand how they did it, but nevertheless, it was a royal pain knowing that once you were detected that was pretty much it. Oh well... JCC |
I don't see what's so "vaunted" about the old AI.
I rather like SH3's AI. Cunning and skill can save your ass. Farther you go... the tougher it is. |
Yes, I can see both sides of the question ... sometimes in SHIII the escort vessels seem rather incompetent, but (as John Channing pointed out) 'knowing that once you were detected that was pretty much it' could get tiresome. Oh, for a middle ground ...

I've installed it currently at an older PC with Win98, and I've gone to Hitachi, one of the guards detected me, I turned my bow into his direction, ordered silent running and he lost me. They are a bigger challenge than the escorts in SH3 really, but they aren't unbeatable. |

i managed it to make AOD work with sound...wow its pretty cool to hear that again after so many years...
"smoke on the horizon captain!" i will try to make a few screenies, there are some things which are very impressive! and those things show exactly why AOD is the best subsim of all times... |

Today everyone just tries to get the best graphics and forgets the rest about it... :nope: Und nochwas: Im englischen schreibt man es "AI" statt "KI". ;) |
