The big differences in german speech in SHIII are because mods usually only change the german speech files.

For example the 'message received'; in german speech for me, there´s the sound of morsing (is that even a word? ).

German speech all the way, mann

I'm not a German sprecher either but after playing SH3 for a year in Deutche only, I understand all the commands and reports as soon as I hear them without reading the English translations.

WWII wargaming helps too, you can't help but gain some understanding of German military terms.

With SH3 I have added the naval aspect to my limited German language skills.

German speech all the way here as well..

I dont speak any German as well but with the English text I can see what they are saying..Using the English speech is simply a total immersion killer. And I am also learning the commands and reports without the need to see the text somewhat now as well.

I honestly never thought about German speech in the game. No wonder something seemed weird about the sailors speaking in English! I guess I'll go switch to German in that case.

Im Dutch, of course I have German speech on.

The thought alone of hearing English on a u-boat makes me cringe almost as much as hearing John Wayne speaking German in Western movies.

Don't you mean "hearing John Wayne speaking in ANY movie". :rotfl:

I speak barely enough German to understand enough to not know what they are saying :rotfl:

I have used german from the befginning and one quickly can understand what the few thing relayed are so do not need to read the text.

Once I did a reinstall and forgot to set it to German
I can not imagine playing this with the pathetic english voices. If they had quirky German accent English I might understand some doing English but it is so pathetic and an immersion killer, IMO

To each their own, I guess.

All I hope is that they can at least find a good, authentic-sounding American voice cast for SHIV

Really dont care for yank voice over's, to many games with yank voices as is (that the 1 thing thats making me cringe about SH4), but luckily like always, I can redo the voices to English and/or Aussie. Did it to SH3, will do so to SH4.

The first time I head the german voices in SH3 I yelled at the PC "ENGLISH - DO YOU SPEAK IT MOTHER FÚ¢KÉ®" (I hadn't corrected the options to english, I did right after that)

Yeah I have a short fuse

Same here. I've been playing in German since SHII, although I don't speak it. Funny thing is, I used Game Commander with SHII and a German language file so I could issue voice commands in German. I was also using the Projekt Schwertfisch sound mod; talk about immersion! It took me a few games to get the hang of issuing my orders; then it was second nature. It was great saying "spargel auf" and watching the attack scope slide up. I can't order a beer or find the bathroom in German, but I can sure crash-dive and launch torpedoes!

The moment i got the game i turned on the german speech and shortly thereafter the text went to german aswell. It really makes it a whole deal more of fun and seems to give it a little more as what one seems to be getting in english.

I did once try the english though, but it sounded so lame i instantly went back again.

Being Dutch and living next to Germany i suppose makes it conveniently more natural for me anyway but after seeing Das Boot how could one play this game with the English option on ? It just is not the same...

*shrug*

I played SH2 and now SH3 with English. Honestly doesn't bother me.

When I'm being hunted, it doesn't much matter. Either there's tension from that or there isn't. Being in a tense situation and not understanding what's being said could certainly add to the tension, but I don't find it necessary.

Maybe the game's just too easy for everyone else.

But I must admit, I have tuned my speech files with voices from the "Das Boot" movie... For example I love the yell of Ralf Richter during crashdive, "Alaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarm, fluuuuuuuten!!!"

For attack runs I have on my grammophone the track named "Konvoi" from Klaus Doldingers Music CD. For those who can´t figure out which one it is, it´s the music played during the surface run against the convoy and the run towards the african coast in gibraltar after the air attack. This music simply rockz

When you run at flank speed at night against a convoy with this music.... s shiver running down your spine is for sure
Try my cover of the DBSM sound mod, available from Terrapin's site. The DBSM guys did an incredible coversion from the movie.

I also will never use the English files in a U-boat. SHIV will be another story, of course.

Well, I certainly respect everyone's opinion, I guess the authenticity of the voiceover just isn't that big of a deal to me. To each their own, as they say.

And on that note, for anyone who does get a kick out of frighteningly authentic voiceovers... you must, must, hear the Chinese crew voiceover in Dangerous Waters!

It is quite simply, the gold standard.
