My personal experience with IE: the last straw was a browser hijack that I was never able to remove completely until I later reinstalled the OS (at the time Windows 2000 Pro), thanks to IE's extensive hooks into the OS. My personal experience with Firefox: no browser hijacks, no spyware (beyond the usual cookies that I don't bother to block) although I only run adaware or Spybot S&D maybe every 6 months. My professional experience with IE: I've dealt with customer's whose brandnew computers were so infested with malware, thanks to IE's extensive ties to the OS and numerous holes, that their PC had become virtually unusable (this is the extreme end but all too common all the same). With Firefox: never dealt with a spyware/malware issue where the customer was using Firefox. Of course Firefox also has a much smaller marketshare than IE, and I suspect the average user of Firefox is probably more computer savvy and less dependent on tech support, but in either case my professional experience with it matches my personal one. |

Again...
If updating fails, simply download the exe file from ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/ and run it, install over your old install. ![]()

Firefox is all I use now-a-days. The straw with IE was on my old computer. It was about two years ago. Somewhere, somehow, I got a homepage hijacker. I don't visit questionable sites like warez or porn, either. I started getting popups, and even ads on webpages were changed to what the hijacker linked, too. I had Zone Alarm at the time. I couldn't run SpyBot or Adaware, or even my AV program. I used HijackThis. I was running Windows ME at the time. When I had the hijacker I noticed two running instances when I press Ctrl + Alt + Delete that I never noticed before. They were svchost and winproc32. Zone Alarm was alerting me that Windows Media Player wanted to connect to the Internet. I had used HijackThis to remove the hijacker. Curious as to why WMP wanted to connect, I let it on a hunch. My hunch was right, WMP was also infected. It redownloaded the hijacker. I removed it again. I tried to do a repair for IE at the time. I got an error. Also, when I tried to open a window, say My Computer, it was blank! Same thing for My Documents, Control Panel, etc. I had to reinstall Windows. After I reinstalled Windows, I left IE and installed Netscape 7.1 I then started using NS 7.2 when it came out. When I built my computer a year ago, I switched to Firefox. Never looked back. I only use IE for sites that need it. Some flash on some sites don't work properly. Kubota's website comes to mind. To this day, I refuse WMP connection to the Internet unless I know why it wants too (i.e. streaming video).

IE works good for me, in combination with Symantec my computer is safe. I have been online for about 10 years or so and nothing bad ever happend to my system because of that. What am i doing wrong ? ![]() And I did get my share of virus emails, visiting dodgy website and downloading infected files. ![]() |
