Yeah the articles in those magazines made for some interesting reading. They were quite popular among the SF guys that I served with, having been published by one of their own (Dye was just a contributor). Amazingly it was still being published until just a few years ago which surprises me because there were hit-men that were hired through Soldier of Fortune magazine. At least two murder for hire examples that became public and the magazine got sued over, but nobody knows how many more went unreported.

^ you look like a crazed ninja turtle looking to " wipe " everyone out.

I have a friend who was originally from Texas. He told me in Texas, there is a " needed to be killed law." If in fact, someone committed this transgression, they needed to appear in court as is normal.

However, when asked, a defendant need only respond, they needed to be killed. If sufficient evidence is presented and a judge or jury agrees that that individual " needed to be killed " you are all good.

I wonder if Neal in Texas can expand a bit on this " law. "

I remember I looked at my friend when he told me that and we both started laughing.

Judge Roy Bean of Texas once presided over a murder trial of a man who shot another man with a rifle. Apparently the victim had been armed with a pistol and had engaged the rifle guy from about 75 yards. The judge felt that going up against a man with a rifle at such a long distance when one is only armed with a short range pistol was suicide and ruled his death as such letting the shooter go free.

Well, ok then. Apparently then, there is some truth to all this. I'm sure there was some extenuating and or mitigating circumstances around this but it's pretty interesting. Anyone else have some thoughts or experiences ?

...proof (at my age) I can still multitask: shoot or wipe my ass! As fer takin' on guys with rifles while armed with a pistol in Napa, that's been referred to as "suicide by cop"... twice in the last 5 years. And, the city has lost lawsuits over it to boot.

...or, in the parlance of a late 1800's coroner's official report I once ran across: "...and he became shot and expired of his wounds". kinda like Alec Baldwin's unfortunate cinematographer recently...

On Soldier of Fortune? That magazine is what got me to enlist in the Army and go AirBorne with the 82nd!
They had an article that said the 82nd was going to Egypt the next year. So I enlisted as I wanted to see the Pyramids!
After a Non-stop flight from Ft. Bragg? I stepped out the door of a perfectly good areoplane in flight.
One my way down I saw those pyramids! Several days later? I got to touch the Great Pyramid with my own hand!
A later issue had my letter to them about that!

April, 1982 issue. In the FLAK section.

I downloaded the PDF of that issue. Forgot all about it until this thread.
