You sank a cruiser with your deck gun? What level are you playing on?

You: One 5" gun.
Him: At the very least four 6" guns.
You: Designed to sink.
Him: Designed not to sink.
You: 1200 tons or so.
Him: 5000 tons minimum.

One ramming by any warship should sink you. In real life even a destroyer would easily turn you into a non-diving gunboat. More likely he would sink you easily. Submarines are not made for gun duels with other warships.

Torpedoes have a minimum arming distance so they won't accidentally explode right after leaving the tube. It's not usually 500 yards, but you should always try to be on the safe side. Sounds like you're doing it right.

Well, realism was set to zero (0). It was my first time at sea aside from sub school.
Gee, I was kinda proud of myself at accomplishing the win.

I thought damage was constant across all difficulty levels

Please forgive me. On the one hand I sometimes forget that everybody starts somewhere. There's nothing wrong with having the realism set for anything you like and playing the way you want. Many years ago there were people who boasted about how many tons they sank, racking up scores that would have made the real kaleuns green with envy. There was even a "Million Tons" club going for awhile.

What to you was pure excitement at a cool part of the game I took as bragging. My mistake, and I apologize.

I remember my first first kill quite clear because it was me. Had a torp circle run on me and nail my sub right in the conning tower. As I slipped down into the deep with water flooding everywhere I cursed out my torpedoman who apparently thought that I wanted the darn thing to circle back around and reload in the rear tubes.

Back when the game first came out, I took on a battleship with my S-boat. He was dead in the water from my torpedoes, so I surfaced right next to him. I guess his guns couldn't elevate low enough to hit me. I managed to knock his bridge off before I ran out of ammo.

I've taken on destroyers with the deck gun in desperation. Even a medium sized merchant with any armament is a bad risk.

That's the trick when attacking a ship with anything larger then an AA gun. You have to get in close enough so the gun can't depress and tear your sub to shreds.

Sometimes context is everything. From one of the more ancient files of Mad Magazine...

Oh god, the tears!

OP: Congrats on the kills, keep it up! However, in the future, those Sanpans (the little fishing boats) are not to be torpedoed or shot at. COMSUBPAC has long-standing orders that any Sanpan sighted should be rammed, this is a punishment for getting a Captain's hopes up with false merchant sightings.
