I sunk my first ship!!!
I flunked sub school so I thought I'd just start a career to see what happens in this game.
Just got my first kill. YeeHaa :yeah: I A small Japanese gun boat. I'm playin' on super easy and saw my first green triangle. I took the shot at 2,000 out and sunk it with one torpedo. I'm a happy camper. :haha: :) |
Congratulations. There is a keg of beer waiting for you back in port courtesy of Admiral Lockwood. You'll always remember your first KO. More good hunting to you.

Way to go skipper.

Congrats!
Now do it again. And again, and again... Hey folks! I found the guy that's buying the next round! |
Good job. :salute:

congrats
one quick tip, gun boats and sub chasers and sometimes even destroyers are very shallow draft boats so make sure to set torps as shallow as they can go to avoid missing but being too deep. also if you hit a destroyer or any ship right on the tip of the bow it does absolutely no damage plus a glancing angle the torp will bounce off and not explode so if you ever are doing a head on shot so keep this in mind. |
For me 2000 yards is max range desperation shot when I can't get closer. 500-1000 yards is ideal range. Exception is when shooting multiple ships in a convoy, for that I might go as high as 3000 yards at big slow moving freighters, starting with the farthest first, allowing 20 seconds per 500 yards at each closer target - the idea being to make all the hits within a few seconds of each other so they don't have time to react. Perfect setup is when I have the closest ship at 500 yards with a 90 degree track, furthest at 2500-3000 yards, firing across the track of the convoy. Depending on how big the convoy is and if the lead escort is out of position I might center the sub dead ahead and fire alternately from the bow and stern tubes, accepting a large gyro angle (up to 45 degrees) in trade for hitting multiple targets with a single attack.
Shooting at maneuverable warships of course is a different animal, for that I'd rather be lucky than good. Even so closer is better, higher percentage of hits when they have less time to dodge. |
Congrats on your first sinking!

Just sunk two more little ships. Fishing boats, really. I was told there were merchants ahead so I chased 'em down and was a little disappointed at both of them. I let my deck gunners have a little night target practice and sunk 'em both. :yeah:
Thanks for the support, guys. :salute: :) |

On the other hand maybe it's because I've gotten old and don't remember anything. :dead: |
Silent Service on the Commodore 64 exactly 30 years ago.
Right after I finished reading "Clear the bridge!". I was using graph paper, ruler, angle finder, points. I had a National geographic map of the southern Pacific Under glass on my desk, and used erasable markers for plotting course. Good times. |
Habit forming is right!!! Been playin' for about 12 hours now. My butt is sore.
I went toe to toe with a Japanese cruiser. Got rammed three times, took on some real damage, but you should see the other guy. :har: My deck gun took 'em down. But, a few of my men are hurt (they are highlighted in red). Are they dead? How do I tell? How do I fix them? Is there a doctor on board? Am I in big trouble? :-? (Wow, that's a lot of questions, huh? :D ) Hey, I keep sinking ships but am told to continue to patrol Hanshu Island and maintain radio silence for 2 hours. How long will I have to keep patrolling this area? Anybody know? Here's my latest save. Lookie at those 6 kills. :yeah:  :D http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/pict...pictureid=8084 |
bouncing torps
Hi all, I like to fire between 700 and 1000, I find anything under 500 my torps just bounce off the ship, very annoying after getting 3 good hits.

Silent service on the ZX spectrum. started in 1987, never stopped since the good old days where my imagination added to the gameplay what the game lacked.
