Okay... why Helsinki Metro - which runs mostly above ground - doesn't have similar somewhat spectacular problems?

Any Finns here with knowledge of Helsinki Metro and railway tech it uses?

the Montreal Metro is electric, but it is totally underground.

Above ground commuter trains use Diesel locomotives...they don't have a problem with snow...

At a guess I'd say that it runs by picking up the current from the underside of the powered rail, rather than from the top, so when the snow falls it doesn't interrupt the power connection between the shoe and the rail.

Not that different in some regards. They wanted (want?) to fully privatise rail here too, but they backed down a bit after observing how that went down in the UK.

I get the impression Holland keeps a close eye on what the UK does anyway, generally not a bad example to follow at that.

You are correct thats exactly how its arranged here. I assumed you would use similar system, didn't know you use such ehm old fashioned way as top contact. Thats quite hazardous way to do it in my opinion especially in passenger rail systems.
