can't tell ...but I recognize Anthony Fokker sitting next to Richtofen.

Train your kids on teh Xboxorz!

$#@%^ #$#$% @#&$@%!!! Suck all the life out of wanting to fly combat aircraft. Christ. Clear back into the late eighties they started screwing us with these damn drones.

At least the trash haulers will have something to look forward to. Until someone figures out how to automate that, too. The ****ers.

Actually, isn't the majority of commercial aircraft semi-automated already?

I'd think it wouldn't be that hard to automate heavy lifting aircraft over routine routes for military.

That is not going to work with 20+ year old aircraft (AWACS). Also usual ROE is to have visual confirmation and finding something through a straw with 2-3 second delay is a huge limiting factor.

The Reaper is already cleared for carrying the AIM-9s IIRC.

Well against a foe like China armed drones would give us an edge, and of course the drone has its own sensors to get an ID and since its a lot smaller than a manned aircraft it can get closer to a potential enemy fighter with less risk of being detected.

You have no idea what you're talking about.

There is a Russian saying - If grandma had balls, she would be a grandpa.

If this if that... If China didn't have anti-sat tech and if you could get real-time-no-delay image not through a straw. That's too many IFs.

What happens when you get your Predator shot down? Is that a sad day? Do you cry a little? Or do you just say "F___ it, I'm gonna get a cup of coffee."

Excuse me Mr. 428 Posts?

I've already said plenty on the subject of ASAT warfare...

Shooting down/hard kill a low altitude recon bird is very different than taking out a GPS or SATCOM bird which are in much higher orbits; Comsats are up at 36,000 km, GPS is slightly lower at 20,000 km, recon birds like to hang out at around 400 km. That extra 30,000 km in alt gives huge space to maneuver.

Plus drones can be controlled line of sight (DASH anyone?), an AWACS type controller aircraft at 30,000 feet could feasibly have LOS RF control of a drone 200 miles away. And one drone at the same altitude could be a rely to others...

I bet it would if they swapped out some of the systems. I would not be surprised if they could have a whole squadron under AWACS control within a few weeks if they wanted.

What does my post count have anything to do with this? What kind of flawed logic is that? Don't be a dushbag. Mkay?

If AWACS is a HVLD assets, which it is, then why is freaking technology from ping-pond era (with no plans to change)? Do you really think that you can stick GCS into already heavily loaded airplane and expect a pilot to use Cband and arrive to a perfect SA required for fighter pilot? Do you really think ATO would allow that kind of ROE?

Educate your self a bit on UAS. Start from FM3-04.15 on unclassified level and then go to a vault if you have the need to know.

I guess Boeing didn't get that memo. They are flight testing the Blk 40/45 E-3s right now with full deployment expected in 2016.

Or maybe you have heard of a little plane known as the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye? Back in 2009 it did almost exactly what I'm talking about! It detected and tracked a LACM then engaged it with a SM-6 (guided by the E-2D) deployed from a another asset. AEGIS ships are already built to do this and have been from the beginning, why else would the Spruances be equipped to fire SM-2s!

Yea I do know what I'm talking about...
