I'm a unemployed Railway Worker in New Zealand,I used to work as a shunter which organizes freight and passenger trains in Wellington after the economic crisis hit,the locomotives have been used less and less and passenger numbers are dropping down rapidly as well and the freight yard is mostly empty at times

Same for trainmen and engineers in the US. I haven't worked regularly at BNSF Railways Inc. for a year and a half now. No freight, no money, no crews needed. They've closed down entire yards and begun using them to store unused rolling stock.

Our major railroads have begun instituting retention boards and unnecessary callbacks in an attempt to stem the tide of employees who are quitting while furloughed. I'm supposed to be back at work within a week or so. Hopefully, NZs railroads will adopt similar measures, assuming they haven't already.

i been unemployed since dec 08,went to truck driving school and got my class A

I suppose that I must rank in with the unemployed, retired from the military at 53 after 28-year's service having been short listed for a position in the local municipality. That was back in 2008 but the job was cut with the recession so only pension income to fall back on unless I am willing to relocate or commute.

Fortunately SWMBO handled the retirement investments well so we're debt and mortgage free and I do volunteer work around town which keeps me busier than working full time. The money sucks but it cannot be beaten for job satisfaction and at this point in life, that's what counts.

Yeah, I'm still in school, using my GI bill. I've been working odd jobs and McJobs off and on for the rest of the time. BNSF calls me back to work from time to time, and the rest of the time they pay me to be furloughed. It isn't much, but it pays the bills.

I think I'm gonna have to transfer schools, though. Empire State Online is really starting to piss me off. It's a decent school to get your general studies done, but the teachers and I do not agree at all. I guess I should have seen that coming, given that the college itself is located in New York.

I'm going to finish this semester, and then transfer schools if BNSF isn't keeping me too busy by then.

Worked for about 9 months + 3 months as a apprentice/trainee prior to employment. My duties were assembly-, testing- and service of oil degassing units. Stockroom duties as well.

The last 6 months the workload was 50% because the production didn't allow for any more work, it's a niche area so it wasn't any mass production, and because there weren't many orders.
My employment was extended month by month, usually I didn't know until later during the month if I was to continue to work the next month or not.

I've been unemployed since July last year.
