Same for trainmen and engineers in the US. I haven't worked regularly at BNSF Railways Inc. for a year and a half now. No freight, no money, no crews needed. They've closed down entire yards and begun using them to store unused rolling stock.

Our major railroads have begun instituting retention boards and unnecessary callbacks in an attempt to stem the tide of employees who are quitting while furloughed. I'm supposed to be back at work within a week or so. Hopefully, NZs railroads will adopt similar measures, assuming they haven't already.

Good luck, fellow railroader

I suppose that I must rank in with the unemployed, retired from the military at 53 after 28-year's service having been short listed for a position in the local municipality. That was back in 2008 but the job was cut with the recession so only pension income to fall back on unless I am willing to relocate or commute.

Fortunately SWMBO handled the retirement investments well so we're debt and mortgage free and I do volunteer work around town which keeps me busier than working full time. The money sucks but it cannot be beaten for job satisfaction and at this point in life, that's what counts.

Yeah, I'm still in school, using my GI bill. I've been working odd jobs and McJobs off and on for the rest of the time. BNSF calls me back to work from time to time, and the rest of the time they pay me to be furloughed. It isn't much, but it pays the bills.

I think I'm gonna have to transfer schools, though. Empire State Online is really starting to piss me off. It's a decent school to get your general studies done, but the teachers and I do not agree at all. I guess I should have seen that coming, given that the college itself is located in New York.

I'm going to finish this semester, and then transfer schools if BNSF isn't keeping me too busy by then.

Worked for about 9 months + 3 months as a apprentice/trainee prior to employment. My duties were assembly-, testing- and service of oil degassing units. Stockroom duties as well.

The last 6 months the workload was 50% because the production didn't allow for any more work, it's a niche area so it wasn't any mass production, and because there weren't many orders.
My employment was extended month by month, usually I didn't know until later during the month if I was to continue to work the next month or not.

I've been unemployed since July last year.

Is it possible to be voluntarily unemployed but happy and financially stable? I am just over 40 and trying to look into my future. Any advice or observations would be helpful.

Opening a business? A mini market, gas station or anything?
Trading is another.

For many it would mean accumulating their saving to a couple million when they are young which means sweating blood for the sweetness of early retirement. Easier said than done and it's foolish if it destroys your health.

The thing is the very rich are still making money even when they're asleep. It's not how hard one tries but how many money making asset one has.
Intellect or expertise and labor is one, owning a company or renting out property or equipment is another and so on and on. Feeling successful or rich is alright but to identify oneself with his social status or position or wealth is shallow and stupid.

Money is not everything though it is important but to tie well being or wellness with being rich is misleading. Being obsessed with it is just plain foolish too imo. If one identifies one's self worth with how much money one has in one's bank account then I say he has a low self esteem. The illusion that the beggar on the street is of lower man than the one living in a penthouse is . . . quite an illusion. The latter is maybe just luckier nothing more. A beggar may fit to be made king while a king may not fit even to be made a lowly clerk.

Have just passed my official 6th month of unemployment. I was out of work longer than that, but lived off savings instead of dole, then savings ran out and I had no other choice but to engage with the bureaucratic behemoth that is the DWP/jobcentre.

Sux tbh.

Am looking into some training/refresher courses in CAD. Right now I can't really afford to live where I am now on the current minimum wage, so I have to push for something better than some crappy burger flipping job type equivalent.

I've had some temping here and there, but if it's 'warehousing' then you are just another turnover figure in staffing... If there's not enough work you get sent home and don't get paid. Have that happen 2 or 3 times a week and that's me not earned enough to pay the rent fffffft!

Jobcentre here are useless; they bang on about all of the jobs available to apply for. What they don't say is half of them are not applying for the job, but to an agency who may or may not actually employ you. either that or all of these great employment opportunities are only part time, which is next to useless for me.

Until the recession and the construction industry taking a dive, I had pretty decent job prospects and availability.

Oh well, kick 'em while they're down!

Unemployed since June 09. Lots of prospects, no results. Lucky the wife has a solid high paying job that we can live on. Mortgage low, both cars paid off, little cc debt and reasonable savings. Better off than most.

I'm enjoying being a stay-at-home Dad to my two daughters(2 1/2 and 3 mos) so there is a upside to it.

Still miss working though.
