Ehhh...you never know.
look at COD, started in WWII, and pretty much rode out the entire "Every shooter must be WWII or halo period"
To most peoples surprise it went modern and pretty much came out as a stronger game because of their willingness to change.

I vote WWII, but it will eventually become stagnate and in need of a change eventually.

I think the next release should be still in WWII. However I'd like to see a arcade/less realistic version with a really nice storyline while still keeping the game dynamic. Ubisoft has already done this with Il-2 and Blazing Angels.

What spawned this idea was seeing the interaction between the captain and crew in SH5. Also a memory from long ago in Aces of the Deep... THE NIGHTCLUB!

Imagine returning from a patrol and speaking with others inside the harbor. Going to the nightclub and having other captains give you hints about things you may encounter on your next patrol. Some unhistorical upgrades for the boat would be cool too

I know it sounds a little rpg'esque for the hardcore simmer out there but personally I love RPG's and I'd like to see the two come together.

WWII.

They haven't even begun to simulate that conflict yet.

They do a good job giving us a veneer. They need to really concentrate on the myriad details and bring the full expanse of the sea war home.

I voted for WW2.

I would also like to see WW1, but most of the sinkings then were made with deck guns. Torpedoes could only shoot straight (I think) and there was no TDC. So it could be fun...

The Cold War had zero sub battles so fudge that...

And the present is even more pacifist. Damned hippies.

WW2 or WW1 for me.

I think info on modern day subs is limited (due to Top secret issues). All the modern subs i've been on i wasnt even allowed a camera onboard.

And i dont like the idea of being able to launch nukes and ending the war in one shot... lol

Before moving to NZ (from Plymouth, UK) I went to Navy days every 2 years.

http://www.justplymouth.co.uk/events/Navy-Days.php

HMNB Devonport, the largest naval base in western europe with over 5000 ship movements a year. And is the only UK site equipped to conduct nuclear refits. Subs and warships were a common sight.

HMS Turbulent

P.S. the naval base is in the wrong position in SH3. It's further up the river Tamar (left river) in RL

Yep multi player should be surface ships ( player 1 (ASW vessel) has to escort a convoy from A to B and player 2 (sub) has to stop them).

even a MMO sub game. although i think the time compresion would cause a bit of a headache for the designers and devs.

No offense, but I think a Cold War version would get mighty boring. Unless it's a hypothetical WWIII scenario, you wouldn't get to shoot at anything... you'd just go listen to stuff and follow other subs. Of course, you'd have a bigger boat to walk around. You probably wouldn't get to go aft though, since the Navy would have a hissy fit if someone modeled one of our "confidential" nuclear engine rooms, even though there's really nothing of interest there, either.

Modern day subs would be boring too (I know... I was there.)

Even if you did had a hypothetical WWIII scenario, you can't use the scope... that damn thing gets picked up on radar the second it breaks the surface... so you'd be doing sonar-only intercepts the whole time.

If it's set in the future... uggh... no thank you. I can't stand any game that's not based on reality.

Main purpose of a submarine in...

WWII - Sink ships, a lot of ships

Cold war - launch missiles

So not very surprising if the ''sinking ships'' game gets more votes.

Although I must admit I would love to give a try to the German type 212.

Yeah thats why all modern subs have basically ditched torpedoes and carry only missiles eh ?
Submarines have many purposes, one of them is to sink high value surface assets. Another is to hunt down other submarines (something that wasn't even possibile in WW2 were you were limited by technology to only hunt surface vessels). And just to set the record straight, the only real submarine of WW2 was the Type XXI. All the other were just surface vessels that could submerge at the last minute to attack convoys. They were useless for any other kind of mission.

So in the Cold war the main purpose of a submarine was to sink high value surface assets and not to target major cities!

Again, I've learn another thing today, great! Thanks!

I would love a cold war game.
But it has to be a "What if" scenarion like if missile exchanges were going to start and you ave to find and sink the Soviot Sub.

I think there is still a lot of mileage to be had with SH set in WWII , ok I played and yes trying to hunt a Boomer and getting away with out being detected was good stuff , but with nukes and fire and forget it takes away I think from the satisfaction of games like the SH series.

I hope there is a next one and I hope its still set in WWII , voice commands would be a good add as well as DX11 though not the top of a WL.

I have always wanted a well done WWI sub game, and I have always had a soft spot for the "starter" boats in all the sub games I have played.

It's the purity found in simplicity that I love. Mission centric, tools are incidental...

Find them, sink them. Create fear.

I would love to see a sturgeon and/or skipjack class boat done in Silent Hunter Style, 1960's or 1970's cold war, I find it annoying in the 688i/SC/DW series where I feel like i'm in a two man minisub and the other guy is the work experience kid along for the ride leaving me to do everything personally.

Of course the idea of a Red Storm Rising game just goes without saying, we'd all love that.
