I made these pics 1986 in the North Atlantic in the area of Newfoundland, Labrador, Grand Banks.
Depending on weather, location, time of day, ..., the water color is very different.

@ Seeadler : Very cool pics, Sir, thanks for sharing.

What matters might not be water colour really, but the weather, in fact . That impacts water colour (probably not in the game though ).
Can't wait to stare at my beloved shades of grey.

There are infinite combinations of colours and light , and it´s impossible representate it with a single colour set in a simulator .

The next step must be a realtime variation of colour and lights in combination with the weather

I think that's why devs usually go with a more artistic interpretation of the colour, and so far in the Silent Hunter series I have preferred stock water colours. IMO modders may do better to focus on textures, efffects and water behavior than colours.

The question is how far in SH5 the ocean color is influenced by pixel shaders, and how far these shaders are customizable for modders?

Here are examples from my own little project, the look/color of the water here is influenced only by shaders. I can change according to the location, weather and other conditions the used shader files and this produced different aspects of the water.
