What do you mean base off of? Flakmonkey modelled the diesel room and other new compartments from scratch AFAIK, there was nothing in SH3 to base these on. A graphical comparison is completely fair. He's done a magnificent job.

In fact they both look great to me. I've been using the beta mod in SH3 for a while, walking around more in my boat, interacting as much as possible w/ crew, riding the storm, crash dives, deep dives and depth charge attacks with them. It's pretty awesome as it is. That's why just thinking what SH5 will bring is getting me so excited. It doesn't matter if there is 28 crewmen, SH3 has even less and it doesn't bother. The whole boat is modelled and now walking around is built in the game, it's not done using the freecam. I hope more interesting interactivity options are present, like clicking gauges, operating levers and opening drawers, cupboards, to check out maps, books, etc. Adding to what the devs have done, w/ the strong moddability of all these aspects, the SH5 interior and living there will be a satisfying experience for sure..

I don't think such comparisons are fair. The devs are constrained by schedule, cost, and governed by system specifications, modders are not.
this is true, but not the whole story. An important factor, i believe, is the love for realism and accuracy. This is the work of an artist who is clearly a sim fan who wants to get the details correct. There is a crucial difference between a sim gamer and an action gamer. The great modders of sh3 (the GWX team, WAC, DD, flakmonkey, raptor and all the others) are striving toward greater realism and an experience which is accurate to the life and times of a uboat crew. Many of the great mods of sh3 are not even graphic but data that's been painstakingly reworked to reflect the historical aspects of the war, the correct workings of the uboat, accurate sounds, instruments, etc, etc. Indeed this takes time, which devs may not have the luxury of, but it also takes a desire and passion for the subject at hand.

i wish the best for SH5 and ubi (after all they have given us the best series in SH) I only hope that it plays more like a uboat simulator and less like an arcade game (cause i dont know if that can be modded away)

Actually Flakmonkey said he used the SH5 diesel room to work on.

Either way, Flakmonkey's stuff defininitely looks better than SH5's in most repects. The greatness is in the extra detail, the things lying around, better textures etc.
The SH5 u-boat looks more impersonal and more basic.

This also makes the SH5 boat seem far more spacious. I could almost think that the SH5 interior is slightly larger in scale, which may be right, but the dramatic difference is cause by the larger FOV in SH5 (notice the angled vertical lines).

Awesome work by Flakmonkey, and I hope that his work can somehow be integrated into SH5!

I'm sure that if SH5 shipped with the modded SH3 images (as superior as they are), many less players would be able to enjoy them thanks to less than adequate computer specifications.

Besides, it's only a matter of time before such accuracy finds its way into SH5 - what you see there in SH3 is certainly not only doable in SH3.
The SH3 mod actually gets very good FPS:

The first thing I noticed, was the lighting.
Sh3 has that dim, cave like atmosphere that I think a sub should have. It gives that stale air, damp, smelly feeling.
Sh5 is kind of bright and clean. Also it looks to be they might have a U-boat that is about 3 feet to wide compared to the SH3.
Sh3 looks a lot better.

Also on a side note, will that mod beable to be used with sh4, I hope so. If you guys say yes, then I am sticking with OM forever!
or untill Ubi adds certain things and gets rid of another.

Source?
Most of the diesel room work was done before any SH5 screens where about IIRC.

Its based on sh5s type7 engine room, and as such isnt as accurate as the stunning detail fest that is tomi_099s work on the engine room for sh4 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=153853), but id wager that the polycount is 50-100x less, meaning those of us with less than wonderful pcs wont suffer too much.
flakmonkey sure showed his dedication to details.
terrific work made by him!

€: I forgot to mention DDs share of the work! sry bout that!

Ahh, I didn't realise that this and tomi's work where different.

ed: aren't the screens in this thread from Tomi's work tho? That certainly isn't based off anything.

These are Flakmonkey's VII interior for SH3, Tomi's been working on TypeII interiors for SH4. Both are beautiful works of passion.
FM says he based it on how the diesel room looks in SH5 screenshots, that's all, you can't use any kind of data or objects from a screenshot, all those are his creations from scratch.

The SH3 shots look better. The SHV interior has the eye level about 2 feet too low and the "field of view" too wide. Also the better "mood lighting" and hanging lights visualy lower the ceiling in the SH3 shots gives a feeling of claustaphobia.

Should all be easily moddable

My word, SH3 really has changed since the last time I played it. (Spending my time around Japan these days)

Very nice. Modders really are miracle workers.
