Thanks ^^

This modding problem reminds me of creating a model railway.
Build it, stuff it, glue it ... BUT DON'T TOUCH IT ... only watch. :rotfl:

IMO this one looks much better than the other one. Maybe it is the smaller lines. They look like pin-stripes.

Did anybody notice ? There is something wrong at this skin. I was just working on a new one when I realized that the draining holes don't really fit the 3D model. They should go a bit upwards to be seen completely. (12 pixels to be exact ). This is a problem carried over from Foofighter's skin.
And another thing are the white parts of the stripes, which would not fit the black parts above to 100%.

I already corrected both issues for the late war version of the skin and have no time right now to finish it. I will correct the early version too tomorrow and then release both.

Anybody notice these two things ?

I did notice the stripes but not the drain holes. Thanks for working on and improving these skins.

Btw, you mentioned doing one in this kind of pattern:

Is that still in the works? Just curious, not trying to rush you

I have been a little hesitant to say this again, but this is the same problem that I had with the Swordfish skin, the limber holes were not lining up because of FOO's original skin, but then I am not having the same problem (that I have noticed ) with this S-Boat skin. And I will say it again...GREAT JOB man.....fantastic work

Hi there,

I finished correcting the few things about stripes and draining holes. Unfortunately the stripes can't be aligned to total satisfaction because SH4 has the bad habit of using the same texture spot for multiple parts of the 3D model. O.k., I think it's this way for efficiency reasons but if I had aligned the stripes perfectly, they would have also shown up on parts of the sub where they absolutely don't belong, so I had to make a compromise. I think they fit at least a bit better now.

The other thing was correcting the position of the draining holes. This gave a weird graphical effect under certain light conditions, when light was reflecting from the hull. I realized that I had to reposition the holes on the occlusion map too in order to avoid that effect but at least that has worked as I hoped .

Just a little screenshot for comparison ( difference might be hard to spot if one didn't notice these two things before, actually ):

Well, I don't
Somebody around here has created 3D models for those, I believe.

i love the job you did but i feel the need to point out the s-boats were 20 yr old hulks that were rusty as hell in spite of how much they tried to maintain them and even a fresh brand new paint job didnt cover up the rust very well or for very long.

i would love to see you take away the "brand new off the showroom" look and change it to a more dirty and weathered look and add a good bit of rust everywhere. at the very least it should still look like a 20 yr old boat.

granted its not realistic to have the dazzle on an s-boat to start with but it is something that "could" have been done at the time and it you had adirty and rusty version it would look more like a somewhat realistic version of a "possible" real version.

just my 2 cents

Actually the dazzle paint was tried well before the war, when the s-boats weren't yet complete walking dead yet! Even then it didn't last long as the findings from the test were that the boat was actually easier to spot....who figured?

Where there rusty looking boats in action during the war ? If they got at least freshly painted before each patrol that could have covered up most of the rusty hull.
But the idea is nice, it would give a whole different appeal to these things, makes the player feel more like sitting in a steel tube that is close before completely falling apart

I thought the dazzle camo scheme wasn't meant to make the boats harder to spot, but rather, to make it more difficult for the enemy gunners/u-boats to determine it's course, speed and length. From what I've read so far, it was rather successful at accomplishing this with it's British innovators and was therefore adopted by the U.S. Navy. Of course, the advent of gun laying radar meant the advent of camo schemes designed to make the vessel harder to see.

Wernher, you're correct, if fact the dazzle paint schemes were painted in bold bright colors, yellows, purples, reds, ect..We just see the black and white photo's, but can you imagine the dazzle schemes painted bold coming across the sea. The lines and colors were done to make it hard to determine course and confuse the eye in WW1. They all basically died out in WW2, ships were easy to spot and updated radar and sonar made the schemes more dangerous than helpful.

They did test several schemes for ww2 subs, painted waves, different colors of gray, towers more sky and deck dark gray. Finally decided why a scheme may help in certain conditions, it could hurt in others. Black was popular until they decided gray was best for day and night.

This is one of my favorites, the colors not shown in the B&W pic were blue, yellow and white....
