They did get the word out , but as it was a military do part of it was classified , so while they told the police and the local government those people couldn't tell the public .

Totally lame excuse, IMO, as the Prez wasn't in the plane. There was absolutely no need to keep the thing "eyes only". Total brain fart on the part of the DoD. Total lack of communication, too, if the idea wasn't run past the annointed one first.

It was a stupid PR stunt. What the hell were they thinking? No wait, they were not thinking.

Reminds me of the old axiom "Its easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission".

I don't buy this photo-op story. What was it's purpose?

Photo op ... stock material for the DoD's use. For whatever they decide to use it for.

Tribesman is right ... they did get the word out to the New York Port Authority around 10am monday the same day of the photo shoot with a message not to tell the general public.

As to why they did it and where the original orders came from I can not say without using the O word.

However in his defense it was reported by ABC news that Mr O was very angry and called in all of the parties involved to vent his anger.

I think some of the residents were over reacting just a bit.

I can understand a resident being concerned with a plane flying over the city (it was not all THAT low). I can even understand a resident being a bit nervous. But when I read about people panicking at the sight of an airplane, that is a bit much.

NYC area has an airport. There are planes flying at various altitudes all the time. Why would someone actually PANIC just by seeing an airplane flying?

If they are that troubled, they need some professional help.

Like I said, concerned/nervous I can understand. Panic I can't.

How much you wanna bet that this is a set up for a lawsuit. It is amazing how a lawsuit lottery can help with some people's "panic"

I sincerely doubt that 747s with fighter escorts fly at 1,500 feet in Manhattan very often.

Ah, when you see Air Force One, a plane known by everyone in the US with a jet fighter in tow flying at low altitude in a city that had two towers leveled with 3500 dead....panic is not so far fetched. I'm guessing this is a situation were you would 'have to be there' to really understand.

What I'm waiting for is for the idiot who dreamed up this jackass stunt to either quit or be kicked to the curb (along with his boss). We're talking the Department of Defense here, shouldn't a modicum of intelligence (say an IQ of above 0) be a prerequisite?

I suppose there should be the obligatory joke about Military Intelligence being an oxymoron?

Can you just imagine the hullabaloo if Bush had done that?

Not to mention the tons of pollutants that aircraft is pumping into the enviroment...all for the sake of a photo op! Were is the outrage for that? Not to mention they are burning up tax dollars for a photo. Where is the outrage in that? Oh yeah, never mind. DC has been given the golden key to the world...do as you may.
