Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

Reformat? Reformat what? How do you do it?
Can you get XP free?

I'm a total computer twit.

For your info, I'm heading for Santiago --still 5 weeks to go.

What are the computer specs to run GWX 3.0?

Probably not, but check around Ebay, Amazon, and the like.

Thx for the welcome (elsewhere) Brag! If your current desktop computer didn't come with a Windows XP install disc then you'll need to buy a copy (new or 2nd-hand - amazon or eBay, e.g.). Once you have this, and have your new laptop (pre-loaded with Vista) sitting in front of you, replacing Vista with XP should be a simple matter. OR (and this may be an unpopular suggestion ) you could 'add' XP to the laptop while retaining Vista (a pretty simple task), in which case you'd choose which operating system to use when you turned the machine on. Perhaps if you can't avoid getting a laptop with Vista on it, you could see how installing/updating/playing SH etc goes on it, and if needed, acquire XP?

the problem is... how hard will it be to get XP drivers for the elements of the laptop? :hmm:
hardware doesn't work on it's own like some sort of magic act

he can't avoid it, XP hasn't been put into new machines since... uhm... a long time ago
also, the issue with Vista (the way I see it) is not "compatibility" but rather... how anoying it is asking you a thousand times about the smalles tasks and details, being painfully slow and prone to stalling when asked to multitask. (that's my experience with a toshiba with vista home)

I too have a vista machine - running starforce-free sh3 1.4 (no mods tho' - YET!)

I'm not sure what hardware you foresee problems with, kenijaru! I imagine XP is still the world's most commonly-used operating system...

Make's Weiß Pinguin's suggestion all the more useful!

Vista home might be your problem there! I use the 'business' edition. Disabling 'User Account Control' (which - pain of pains! - requires a reboot) deals to the first issue you raise. I find it annoying too, but were I to disable it I'd need a slew of resource-hogging software (virus scanners etc) to do the same job. Haven't noticed any deficiencies on the multitasking front - tho' file operations do go ridiculously slow (even after a service pack!). I mean... to copy the tiniest of files can take an inordinate amount of time...

When my computer crashed I reloaded Vista (32) with the
phone help of an Alienware tech. I then downloaded SHIII
from Direct2Drive (already patched). It loaded with no problems.

I then loaded GWX 3 and some mods over SHIII. Again it
loaded fine and I am up and running with Gold.

The SH3 "Encore" edition at Amazon is reputed to be Starforce free. It actually contains both SH2 and SH3, for what that is worth.

XP costs about $150. (IMO it is repugnant that Microsoft uses its power to bully customers by forcing us to swallow Vista or pay extra to downgrade to XP.) Perahps you could buy a quality used laptop that already has XP on it.

I suppose you are aware that you will need a powerful computer with a really good video card.

Best of luck.

Can't say for sure from this distance, but it is 95% the answer is "no".

Why not see what is on eBay. You might get lucky. And if you find one that looks promising, get some advice from people here as to whether it will run SH3 comfortably.

Another possibility would be to install the Linux operating system and run SH3 under something called Wine. I am looking into that myself for a Mac. The problem there is that if you are not somewhat of a computer guy, then a Linux/Wine install could be a headache.

Or better yet...if you have a big enough Hard drive...set up a DUAL BOOT with both WinXP and Vista http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_v...step_guide.htm

Just about any new laptop with a dual core and a reasonable Gfx card will handle it. Just make sure you get them to put in about 4GB of RAM.

If reformatting and installing XP is too hard you can install SH3 and GWX3.0 on a laptop with Vista. I'm currently sailing that way right now as my desktop is in the shop awaiting a new motherboard.

The destructions to do that are in the Install SH3 on Vista thread which is stickied in this forum.

You need to be real careful with starforce copy protection but if you just remember to remove it before trying to play for the first time then it should be no problem.

Of course if you run into problems you can always post something here and get loads of occasionally helpful advice.
