On pseudo-AI (as ship) sub's - searchlight no prob's ...
Well IIRC when the Open Hatch Mod was done they were able to add interieur lights to any object. So if someone could add a search light mounted on the flak that would turn with it, it would be a step in the right direction. Question is: can only normal lights be added or searchlights as well?

These are absolutely different situations ...
In an interior there are all (objects and controllers) to make additional "light sources" ...
But to make controllable searchlight on human sub - it's fantasia ...
Pity. Well the question was worth a try. Thanks Anvart.

Hi Anvart,

Secret project „Ursel“

Ursel was a experimental rocket sytsem for defence against eneymy destroyers.. The rockets should be launched from the submarine. At first the german engineers made their experiments when the sub was surfaced, later submerged. Details: solid rocket, 1,8 meters long, weight 80 Kg, with 15 Kg TNT on board. It should engage the enemy ships with a rocket speed of 60 knots froam a distance of 300 Meters.

For the sub XXI it was planed to launch the rocket from inside the boat against enemy hunter-killer groups. For that rason the XXI should get 3 inside rocket tubes. First successful experiments took place 1942 in Peenemünde from the submerged sub U-511. These tests were made with rockets, which could reach a distance up to 10 Km. After WW2, „Ursel“ was further developed by the Americans unter the the rocket Programm „Regulus“


Geheimprojekt „Schwimmweste“

Bereits 1943 schlug der Organisator des Volkswagenwerkes, Dr. Bodo Lafferentz, dem Generalmajor Dr. Walter Dornberger (Leiter der Versuchsanstalt Peenemünde) vor, V 2 Raketen von U-Booten vor die US Küste zu schleppen, um sie auf New York und andere Städte abzuschießen. Tatsächlich begann die Marine mit der Projektuntersuchung. Sie sah vor, dass drei XXI mit tauchfähigen Pontons, in denen je eine V 2 mit der dazugehörigen Ladung Äthanol Treibstoff untergebracht war, die Reise vor die amerikanische Küste unternehmen sollten. Erfolgreiche Versuche mit dem umgebauten VII-C Boot U 1063 fanden in der Danziger Bucht statt.

Direktor Lafferenz von der Deutschen Arbeitsfront hatte durch praktische Versuche nachgewiesen, daß ein U-Boot bis zu drei größe tauchfähige Schwimmkörper schleppen konnte. Mit U 1063 wurde der Unterwasserschlepp erprobt und zeigte nur minimale Probleme. Dadurch entstand die Frage, ob es möglich sei, in diesen Schwimmkörpern A 4-Raketen mitzuführen. Der Gedanke war, diese Raketen aus den Tauchbehältern zu starten. So entstand 1943 ein weiteres Projekt. Die Transport- und Verschußbehälter sollten eine Länge von 37 m und einen Durchmesser von 5,5 m haben. Bei der Grösse sprach man von der enormen Wasserverdrängung von 500 Tonnen. Nach Erreichen des Zieles wäre das Heck geflutet worden und der Schwimmkörper hätte senkrecht gestanden und ca. 5 Meter aus dem Wasser geragt. Auf einer kreiselstabilisierten Plattform wäre das A 4 betankt und überprüft worden. Die Stromversorgung sollte durch das U-Boot erfolgen. Kurz vor dem Start hätte die Bedienmannschaft den Behälter verlassen. Das Startsignal wäre vom U-Boot aus gegeben worden. Auf dem Startweg innerhalb des Schwimmkörpers beabsichtigte man die V 2 in Schienen zu führen und den Gasstrahl über eine Schurre um l80° umzulenken, so daß er nach oben austreten konnte. Für die Fahrt über den Atlantik berechnete man bei 12 Seemeilen Geschwindigkeit zum geplanten Ziel (USA) etwa 30 Tage. Vorgesehen waren die sog. Elektro-U-Boote vom Typ XXI. Die Antriebstoffe wie flüssiger Sauerstoff und Äthylalkohol hätte man in den Schwimmkörpern neben der Rakete mitgeführt. Der Verlust an flüssigem Sauerstoff währen der Anfahrt wäre durch entsprechend grosse Tankbehälter auszugleichen gewesen. Das Projekt sollte in Verbindung mit der Stettiner Vulcanwerft erarbeitet werden. Noch am 9. Dezember 1944 fand bei der Waffen-Prüfabteilung 10 (Raketen) des Heereswaffenamtes eine Umfangreiche Besprechung statt. Bis Ende März 1945 sollten dann die Voruntersuchungen abgeschlossen sein. Im Februar 1945 wurde Peenemünde aber bereits geräumt. Auch die von der Werft begonnenen Muster konnten nicht mehr fertig gestellt werden.

no fantasia. It could be done. One problem though is the searchlight would come 'on' everytime an enemy is spotted and it's nighttime.
The searchlight could be attached to an item on the sub or it could be made a stand-alone object. Being a stand-alone object would be unrealistic wouldn't it? Correct me if I'm wrong but subs didn't have searchlights mounted on anything or weren't even included on the subs.

Racerboy ... Anvart had a good thought I think adding it to the flak gun is a good work around as it allow the the player to manually operate it to indentify ships flags early in the war at night later in the war I think your taking you life in your hands

Leaving aside the problem of near-constant storm conditions most months, it's nigh-on impossible to get the flare to deploy at the right spot. The AI crew don't know how to use it either.

I'm not sure if it was standard equipment, but there are certainly accounts of boats using searchlights. U-48 seems to have had one. The sources are out there (Google "u-boat searchlight" for a start).

Some interesting ideas so far...

Yes, i can image, that it is the simplest way, after i made my own experience with searchlight experiments on a sub - with no succesful results. Have you any ideas?

More than searchlights U-boats used Signal lights like in the "Das boat " movie, but i doubt that a commander will use it at night because could be spotted far away by a destroyers or planes.
