Default Dead is Dead

When I played IL-2 offline campaigns, I would play "dead is dead." That means when I get killed, the career is over, no restarts, no reverting to last saved. I lost a few nice kill totals that way...

Is that a feasible approach in SH3? Do many play this way? How hard is it to make it through, say, a patrol? A year?

For those of you who play this way, how is your play different than if you weren't playing this way? Sure, I expect you're more cautious, but _how_ more cautious?

I'm really looking for tips on playing to sink ships AND survive.
