Excellent! And after Prien's raid there should be no chance of getting into any British base. Ever.

I have to say that I find harbour raids quite easy and enjoying. I'm playing GWX, am in late 1940, have just returned from three harbour raids on one patrol, having been in Loch Ewe (good), Firth Of Clyde (boring) and Liverpool (more boring). Loch Ewe is very hardly defended (one Elco, one Trawler), so you can do what you like as long as you stay submerged (the Fiji will kill you otherwise), and in Firth of Clyde it was the same defense (but with a sub net to pay attention on). Liverpool was a threat, three Trawlers and one Elco chased me through the channel to the habour, but they eventually all ran aground thanks to the AI stupidity. Liverpool hadn't got big ships, just a big tanker and a large freighter, but they were American, so I didn't attack. If you are already in the harbour, it's fun playing around.

Last patrol I was in Dover, starting from Calais, and successfully killed the whole harbour, with a little help from two wings of JU-88s. There were many DDs, Trawlers and Elcos, but due to AI's stupidity they all crashed against the quays and sunk themselves. Also it's nice to surface in the inner harbour if you can make a direct line between you and two warships. The last warship will kill the one in the middle, and I am protected by the buildings in between both harbours. :rotfl:
Even new arriving DDs crashed on the quays, some sank, some stayed there unmanoeuverable. I had plenty of time getting all those Freighters with the deck gun and the huge Liner and CL with three torpedoes each. Happy hunting.

After shooting all torpedoes and returning through the channel to my new base in Lorient (yes, I made it through the Channel, just navigate close to the French coast and you'll survive) I spotted a large convoy, having the Revenge BB in the middle. I could only kill it with my AA guns, but didn't risk it. What a pitty I didn't have any torpedoes left.

Anyway, I am harbour raiding quite often and don't find it that difficult. So far. Now it's early 1941... things will get worse, I think.

Raiding during a storm makes it easier too.
Once I made a southern entrance raid and all of the DD's were pointing toward land as if they beached themselves in fear of U-53!

must have been a glitch
I'm playing gwx1.03 loaded via SH3 cdr.

Yeah, harbor raiding really isn't that tough, even in GWX. The hard part is making the approach on the surface and getting as close as you can before you have to submerge, because you'll need your batteries and air to get you all the way in.

But once you are in, you are set. The AI is not very bright in harbor, and it is trivial to get them to crash into land or the docks. You can even surface, using the docks as a shield, and wait until all the ships have run out of ammo. Then you can sail out and finish everyone off with the deck gun!

If you want to play reaslistically the only hard part will be timing when you first submerge so you have enough air and batteries to make it in and out. If you can avoid detection on the way in and out, you're home free. It's not so tough - stay at 2 knots or less.

Liverpool was a main concentration point for North Atlantic convoys. There should be 50-100 merchants there at any one time, and more escorts than you could hope to survive. Same with Loch Ewe, or any main naval base.

you're right, there SHOULD be more ships. Until now, the most crowded harbour I raided was Dover, about 15 ships, followed by Scapa Flow and Loch Ewe.

Funnily enough, someone raided Firth Of Clyde before me, most of the ships were already sunk when i approached. The big ones, of course
