Harbour Raiding Tips & Tricks...
Wheres Mohr when you need him! I just got into the middle of scapa but was joined by five friends...needless to say it ended in all hands lost! Another DiD career over, but this was in 1939! I'm a newbie when it comes to raiding ports, so could do with a few helpful pointers. I was in a Type VIIB U-Boat.
A perfect run, all evasive maneuvers were pointless, four DC's to the rear quater and had the conning tower mashed by the DD as it ran over the top of me! Not pretty! Tried to blow balast and surrender, but I think the hull imploded! http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r...188.13_218.jpg |
I've raided scapa once (i'll never do it again......) in Nov. 39' and I sunk HMS Illustrious . The trick of gettin out was stay perpendicular to the shore at P/S depth, when a DD lines you up, (Hard a por or starboard at the last minute) there is a chance that it will run aground :smug:. Off course I raided scapa in a II boat (the best for harbour raiding:yep:)
Just dont do it after 40 (its pretty impregnable then..) Try these links for info also http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...arbour+raiding http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...arbour+raiding http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...arbour+raiding |

what side did you enter ? east south or west ? |
I came in through the South entrance, got past about 5 DD's but one of them picked me up not far from where the ships are docked, called for some friends, including a few aircraft, which although couldn't damage me, were a constant neusance.

Go in from the East. in GWX there's sunk ships there used as blockage, but you sneak on in :D
Also, don't ever surface. Ever......... and keep my ur periscope use to a minimum, they tend to shoot it off lol -Indy |

unless you dont play GWX i enter east and exit west. @ indy: you have no idea :arrgh!: i dont do anything else than surfaced trough the harbour |
Lol Mojr, your the kind of guy who on sight of a lone DD goes flank speed on the surface firing away with the deck gun! :P. :arrgh!:
I'll try it the way you do it. When is the best time to go in? When I go in all I get is a troop transport and a DD parked up:down:, I want some carriers or BB's! |
Right if you want to go in, and get away with it here is what you will do.
Firstly, wait till nightfall. Sneak in at a reasonably slow speed on the surface and if needbe, put the boat low in the water. If you sight a destroyer be prepared to go to Periscope depth and silent running. Don't rush wait for him to pass, he will be using hydrophones not ASDIC unless you alert him somehow. When clear come back to the surface and continue sneaking, going up and down as necessary. Keep your battery charged up at all costs, you may need it. When you sight juicy targets fire and then leave. Don't stick about or you are asking for hurt. Generally speaking shallow water = death for U-boats. |
Well Prien used the Eastern entrence of Scapa through the blocade ships. This is modeled in GWX. What isnt is the lack of patrols inside the Scapa. I have changed this from mission editor for myself, no patrols inside the Scapa until october 13th 1939 and novice crews in everything parked there. Remember that Prien was also surfaced during the raid. So untill Priens raid there will be the chance to try to do the same in the game. Maybe with even better results.:arrgh!:
