I knew it! I went through it once. That picture makes me sad though. Seeing it decaying like that.

When I stepped foot on it, it was still in the water. Its a Gato class whcih is my favorite class. I need to dig up the pictures that my family took when we were there.

"She received a total of 12 battle stars for World War II service. She is credited with sinking 15 ships, a total of 80,580 tons of enemy shipping, eighth highest of all U.S. submarines in total Japanese tonnage sunk."
Hey Link.....I think this picture was at refurbishing and final stop for the Drum. Notice the dirt mounds? Perhaps to sure up the hull for stability?

I took the plunge men! Tomorrow 0700, me at the USS TORSK as a volunteer. Man, they jumped at my offer to volunteer to help with upkeep. I guess I will be scrubbing the brass fittings! I need to get a digital camera so I can do some pics and post. Being that I will have full run of the submarine...I intend to do so!

OK, don't this actually happened . . . and I doubt that it did . . . but did anything like Operation Petticoat actually occur? I mean with the Pink Boat?

The paint would oxidize and look pink. It also happened on the aircraft. There was a notable P40 that turned pink from the oxidized paint.

Good for you! I wished I had projects like that located closer to where I live. That's the downside of living in a neutral country I guess.

Back to topic: MS9 "All black" was actually the standard camouflage at the start of the war http://www.shipcamouflage.com/measure_9.htm, or alternatively MS 10 http://www.shipcamouflage.com/measure_10.htmwhile later they apparently found out that a combination of lighter grey in the sides with darker grey above was better

Here's the USS Cod (Gato class with the cutdown tower) in Cleveland, Ohio, pics taken by me. I also believe she is the only fleetboat left that has a 100% working TDC. You can see the gray paint and the top deck is painted black. I remember that the deck was very hot the day I took the shots due to the sun beating down on it all day.

Here is a closeup of the tower with all the awards and ships sunk, junks sunk, and a martini glass for saving a dutch submarine crew. I didn't feel like rotating the image, sorry.

I would say the best. She's completely mint and even the diesels work if they chose to run them. I suppose the fact it sits fresh water helps. If you go you have to buy the pin they sell. It has the logo of the skull with the torpedo smashing through it.

I don't know if I'll ever get to visit the US, but if I do, I won't have any problems figuring out what to do...
