Finnish people are nutters, but very nice with it. Only ever been to Finland once, rented a cabin with some buddies out in the sticks about 20km from Tampere and spent the whole time getting drunk, having barbecues, saunas, then swimming and sailing on the lakes, it was great. The airline lost my luggage at the airport, so I ended up having to wash my clothes in the lake and stuff like that, but I didn't give a toss, I was having too good a time to worry about it:rotfl:

That's what I do on most weekends in summertime.

We have an summer house on a small island in the middle of nowhere with an big lake surrounding it.

"The people of Finland have by this step taken their fate in their own hands; a step both justified and demanded by present conditions. The people of Finland feel deeply that they cannot fulfil their national and international duty without complete sovereignty. The century-old desire for freedom awaits fulfilment now; Finland's people step forward as a free nation among the other nations in the world."

The Finnish declaration of independence was adopted by the Parliament of Finland on 6 December 1917.

The official festivities usually commence with the raising of the flag on Tähtitorninmäki, in Helsinki. There is a religious service at the Helsinki Cathedral, followed.

It is traditional for Finnish families to light two candles in the windows of their home in the evening, Historically these two candles were used as a sign to inform Finnish Jäger troops that the house was ready to offer shelter and keep them hidden from the Russians.

Parades are held, honorary guards are posted on all the war cemeterys and candles light them up.

The Jäger flag.

C.G.E Mannerheims grave in Hietaniemi war cemetary in Helsinki.

Independence day reception in the Presidential palace, knights of the Mannerheim Cross are traditionally the first ones to enter.

Happy birthday Suomi/Finland, we love you!

Sad to see there's fewer and fewer "Knights" each year.

There's no big enough font to use here, so I just use the normal;

Thank you.

I think talvisota is one of the best movies ever! I saw Tali-Ihantala yesterday with a bunch of veterans and it was great too.

And last but not least:

Hyvää syntymäpäivää Suomi ja kiitos kaikille jotka uhrasivat henkensä ja taistelivat tämän hienon maan puolesta!

Translation: Happy birthday Finland and thank you to everyone who sacrificed their lives and fought for this fantastic country!
