I know that you are still in an early fase with this mod, but shouldn't someone introduce some Dutch submarines (even playable) in future?

Curiously, from a pedantic point of view, will "Djakarta" maintain the Dutch name throughout the war? I mean, we all know the Japanese changed it to garner support amongst the locals, but the Allies still referred to it as Batavia until after the war when the name was adopted by the Indonesians.

Just like Singapore: the Allies never referred to it by the Japanese-occupied name of "Syonan-to".

(I'm Australian but I have an interest in the Dutch East Indies affairs of pre/early WWII)
It's on my to do. The names are probably stored on a campaign layer somewhere, but I haven't found those yet (haven't looked very hard, to be hounest). I guess it should stay Batavia until Indonesia is recognized as it's own sovereign nation and that's well outside of the game's timeframe.

Oh yes, I'll just copy some subs over and use them as in-game placeholders for the time being. I haven't gotten around to those yet because I fear their system is a little more complicated then the regular ships. I'm still toying around with things but I should have most of the ships down.

The only problem with completely original subs eventually will probably be the interiors, the sailors, voices etc etc. It's going to be a huge time sink.

One huge advantage of (original) dutch subs:
They were very similar to U-Boats!
They even used G7A torpedoes (yes, the dutch actually used german torpedoes to sink japanese ships:rotfl
Ok, the G7A had a long and useful life anyway, was used in the postwar german navy and a lot of NATO navies until around 1970 at least.
I suppose the fire control procedures and internal arrangements would be similar.

I did something stupid and had to reinstall SH4. (Remember kids! When modding, always keep a back-up file in case of screw-ups!) Somehow the Campaign_LOC.mis got overwritten and every single location entry was deleted. Makes the campaign map a little bland.

Also, the excellent pack3d tool by Sansal doesn't seem to like planes and subs very much so those are gonna be in a bit later.

Anyway, the Battle of the Java Sea will be included as a Singleplayer mission. It's not totally accurate because there's no Fubuki or Kagero class destroyers yet or any of the heavy cruisers. The Shiratsuyu and Asashio's are there however, as is the Sendai CL.

I've used Tribal's for the Royal Navy destroyers and a Kents for the HMS Exeter and HMAS Perth. The Northhampton class and the Clemson class detroyers are already in the game so at least the Americans are accurately depicted . The battle should be pretty even even though ABDAFLOAT got sunk IRL, but that's because there's no ship-launched torpedo's yet.

You play with a porpoise for now, I'll swap it out with a K class sub once I get em in.

Look for version 0.2 tonight.

Great mod thanks!

I wish more Australians knew about the sacrifices made by the Dutch in the Pacific theatre. If it wasn't for you and the Yanks we'd be a nice part of the Empire of Japan.

Ok, v0.2 is up. Check the startpost for the link and changelog.

The battle of the Java Sea quick mission is a real resourcehog. I have a fairly beefy computer and it was even brought to it's knees by the mayhem going on. There is a lot, and I mean a LOT of shooting going on right of the bat (2 CA 2 CL 10 DD vs 2 CA 3 CL and 9 DD's to your south and a convoy of +/- 25 ships to your north). This is accurate as both sides fired thousands of shells with in the end only 5 or 6 hits. I don't know the outcome of every battle because of the simulation part in SHIV, the one given I do know is that I gave every ship a poor or novice crew rating (with the exception of the convoy DD's they don't partake in the battle). This is to simulate the fatigued ABDA crews and the Jap's lack of torpedo's.

The battle in real life lasted well into the night, but for the sake of the game and your system they'll only fight for about 30 minutes in game. The ABDA will turn tail to Surabaya and the IJN will return to it's merry invasion tour.

I've also noticed some strange problems with the range of the cruiser guns; their range seems to be exactly the same as the destroyers. I'm not sure why, but I'll bet someone will figure it out soon enough.

For the rest I'll try to figure out a way to get some placeholders for the planes and research some more to make the quick mission more historically correct.

You can get all versions of pack3d here if you dont have them all

I was messing around with a night surface action, and the game is really poor for doing surface engagements since the DDs don't use their primary weapons---their torpedos.

This is a major failing, IMO.

As for the CA guns, I have a feeling all the guns are limited to the overly short visibility distance of the game.

As it is, I think it's better for players to stay the heck away from any battles since they will be pretty disappoiting, IMO.

[quote=LukeFF]I like the story about this Dutch minesweeper:

"HNMS Abraham Crijnssen

The Crijnssen gathered fame during the Second World War, because of her spectacular escape from Surabaya to Australia in March 1942. Covered with treebranches, the minesweeper crossed the Japanese naval lines camouflaged as a tropical island."

That`s a real happened story!! I have been on that ship last year. It lays in
the dutch navy museum at Den Helder. For every dutchman i say get there and
enjoy!!

Really fantastic story how that could done to escape the japanese navy.

Guys,
I become very lunatic now. I have asked this 2 months ago to add the dutch
navy vessels.

My grandpa have served onto the

- java
- sumatra
- hertog hendrik
- Z7
- van Speijk
- Gelderland

So you can maybe understand that i am very proud now that i can see some
dutch vessels into the game.

When somebody want to know more details or photo`s, i have it all.
I own a book The cruisers Java and Sumatra and many other photo`s.
Maybe i can help to model the ships. You tell me!!

Btw i am surprised to read correct details under this subject.
Great guys!!!

Basicly when I spawned the ABDACOM fleet they were immediatly taken under fire from jap coastal batteries and sunk.

Rather odd considering the port was still in Dutch hands at the time. I've altered the jap_coastalbatteries.mis a bit so the batteries don't appear around Surabaya until well into april. Takes some time to build em I suppose.

Anyway during my first run the 3 java (houston class in disguise) class got beat by two destroyers and a light cruiser. So far so good.
No that isn`t so far so good. The Java was hitted by a japanese sub. The Java
had mines stored in the backside of the ship. A torpedoe hitted that area.
Java Sunk within 15 minutes.
