SH needs to stay in the pre-45 era. The only other decent idea is a WWI boat, which would probably be pretty fun, esp. if the game modeled massive hits for not following cruiser rules at certain times, and included Q ships and such.

The older boats are just better at simming. I enjoyed playing 688 when it would still work on whatever was the os for the week, but that just wasn't as much fun as watching ships through a periscope and shooting torpedoes at it. Watching the sonar fall on 688 isn't as much fun as listening to headphones on a creaky old type II.

The new boats are a different genre than the Silent Hunter series. The only thing that we really are missing is a DC 2, which is not something that I am keeping my fingers crossed about. A new DC would stike me as something for a real niche gamer crowd, unless it had neat stuff like shore bombardments and chasing ghouls around the deck with a shot gun....

We seem to keep having this same discussion over and over again. Just do a search for "SHV" or "SH5".

No, we don't need a post-war nuclear sub version, at least not titled "Silent Hunter". SH has always been a WW2 title, and it needs to keep being improved until it's perfect.

Why not create another sim, but in a totally different era, such as the age of sail? You have the "world" already created; build on it by creating man of wars, 74-guns ships of the line, sloops, etc. Sure, the gameplay, AI, models, etc, would be very different between these two eras, but they both operate in the same medium, so why not try to recoup your investment by creating and selling another game? I know many people loved playing Man of War II, which came out in 1999, and would love to see such a game updated with SH3/4 graphics.
A dream would come true! Since reading the Richard Bolitho Saga by Alexander Kent I want to (virtually ) command frigate and ships of the line. Just thinking of such an option makes me drool.

And this was around 1898!

I'd love to command a frigate in an age of sail game. Would need to keep the Luftwaffe out of it, though. :rotfl: :rotfl:

A subsim MMORPG. You can play both sides, or a destroyer escorting.. and even aircraft.

Sort of like WW2 online. Only not laggy.

What? Life after Silent Hunter???? I don't want to think about it!

If they ever to a modern one, the problem will be how and where to set it. There hasn't been a conflict that could make a good bases for a conflict (the best that comes to mind would be the Falklands, and that's pushing it). The only way is to go hypothetical like Harpoon.

It's best to stick to WW2 era subs as there is more historical data to work with. A new game engine for the pacific and atlantic would be a good starting point, maybe some AI subs and the ability to play different countries (British, U.S., German, Japanese, Italian and so on). Doing it by add on or providing the bare bones of it so modders can do the work for them.

Maybe that'll be SHV. Wasn't SHIV originally conceived as an addon for SHIII? In any case, there are many things that they can improve upon, whether they do Japan or Germany.

I like the idea of a future redesigned SH implementing units from several nationalities in order to engage online.Dont need 3 or 4 subs from each, would be enough with one,the most representative from each country,VIIC from Germany,Gato US,IJN,Royal Navy.....
Also a Carrier Command could be implemented,if not emulating the big fleet carriers,at least give the chance to be in command of a Hunter Killer group with scort type carriers like Casablanca and Independence.

But I think to fasten SH on WW2 forever is a mistake. We have not actually modern naval games with the graphical quality that Ubi give us,have we?So,in a future,I dont say when, would be interesting the evolution of this series towards the early Cold War,mainly focused to online engage.

I would like to see a SHV. but there are only now 2 untaped ressources. WWI, and the cold war. For the cold war.... Dig up Tom Clancys Red Storm Rising and give it a makeover.
