If this forum is as friendly as Egosoft I shall feel quite at home.
You're at the right place .. subsim's forum is one of the best in the web - unbelievably great people.

Silent Hunter 3 with mods rocks. Possibly the most immersive WWII simulation there is, at the moment.

I must admit I have tried X2 once and I hated it. How can people compare it to elite? Anyway, play what you like.

Hey, that's funny....2 other X3-players showing up in the same topic.
And I thought nobody overhere knew about that game!

I loved it!
But I waited with buying X3 right after release, because that forum was simply overwhelmed with game-issues, untill EgoSoft finally managed to patch it to a stable degree...that's when I bought it.
And I played it...nothing else for weeks and weeks.
No wonder, as it took me around 3 weeks to get passed the - insane - learning-curve.
People say that SH3 has a steep learning-curve (?). Well, that's nothing compared to X3, LOL!

But there's this X3 user-interface...
Of course, after a while, I got a little bored, playing only 1 game.
So X3 was shelved, with the plan to return to it some day.
I never did. The userinterface kept me from doing so, I honestly think so.
It's such an incredibly bad design, and in the end it takes away much of the fun.
Take Oblivion, for example...a game maybe just as complex as X3, but with a userinterface that's intuitive and logical.

So X3 was shelved, and along came Oblivion.
And RedOrchestra-OstFront '41-'45.
And then I returned to SH3 - first using the IUB-mod - while waiting for the GWX-mod.
And now playing GWX.
GWX put Oblivion on the shelve again, lol.
But returning to X3? I know there have been some interesting addons released (Bala-Gy's research missions, stuff like that)...but I expect my return to the X-Universe will be for X4.

wow, I come back and the whole world has been on here.. well, ok, quite a few other folk!

Paajtor, glad you got some mileage out of the X-series, and now I want to find out about this Oblivion you speak of!

Hakakura, what IS a kaleun? Will I like being it? Does it mean sailor?

GlobalExplorer, the memory of things gone always remains rosier than the now. I recently downloaded an Elite clone called Oolite, which seems as close as you can get to the original from what I found. I tell you, I wouldn't want to go back to that state of graphics again, although all those years ago I felt Elite was THE best. Egosoft's X-series IS like Elite in that it is open-ended and that you can trade, fight pirates and the enemy or attack innocent ships, build huge empires and fleets etc, and although there is a plot, you don't have to stick with it ( after XBTF anyway), and it is that freedom to go your own way rather than be tied to a particular route that so many of us find appealing. It is a deep and evolving game, but you do need patience and tenacity to slog through the early days. I am sorry you did not enjoy it - but we are all different

Back to thread ( ish). My best beloved is so taken with my 'new' Grey Wolf SH3 that he wants his own copy of the sim. Hmph, he used to work on war thingies so he knows a thing or two and will be steaming past me in no time I reckon, but if it stops him buying other stuff on eBay, I shan't grumble. Well, like danlisa says, time to spend some time at sea ( again), byebye for now.

Not as far ago I was wondering, what the hell was that 'Kaleun' that they call each other on this forum... Probably some American crappy word I shouldn't bother. And then I finally bought and watched "Das Boot". And then I knew...

PS Welcome among us, Kaleun (Kaleunin?).

No, you don't.

Not yet, at least....first enjoy SH3 a bit more.

As for your rigging-issue: set Anisotropic Filtering to 16x (or as high as possible) in driver-settings, and see if that works.

well thank you all gentlemen. I have just been having another bash at the torpedo training ( sigh). I can usually nobble the big merchant with one or two 'fish' ( zat right?), but getting lined up to sink someone else takes me such a long time that most of them have scuttled off and I have to chase them and try to come alongside..ee. I WILL get the hang of it.

I have read quite a bit of the Grey Wolves manual, but not too much of the history bits, next I will try the tips and tricks section on here to see if I can improve my performance.

I have several times watched the Das Boot sequence play through. Each time I felt a mixture of admiration and respect for the young men who had to endure such awful conditions threats and possibilities for months at a time, and a renewed confirmation that war is indeed horrible.

Oblivion is a nice game. I have that also installed on my comp. There is a big mod community for that game as well.
I bought the expansion pack for the game during christmas so i wanted to give it a go again.

But the game is an adventure/rollplaying whit swords and sorcery and its not a simulator.

Btw when we speak of other games. I do also have a version for Elite 3 installed that works well even on a new computer. Quite fun to do some nostalgia playing sometimes also.
Did you know that David Braben is planning to do a sequel Elite4. His company is currently working on another game but he have stated that when that game is released they will start to work on Elite 4.

And soon will SH4 be released.

Darn iam playing to many games

Oblivion and SH3 are death to my time, and time is something I really can't afford to kill as a student. I play MTW2 as well, which is another one of those time wasting games. I've restricted myself to SH3 for the time being (and not playing alot), till exams are over.

I know the feeling. So many wonderful games and so little time to play. Unfortunatelly with work, and especially now that term has started and students (like you Boris:p ) are back (exams to prepare, people to supervise, administration, teaching etc) I am so busy, I consider it a luxury if I can ever play GWX during the week.
