I did listen to the intro and made out the drummers last name as Gardner, I Googled "sam cooke gardner drums" and the first returned link was for the Wikipedia article on Cooke's live Copa recordings and there it listed all the musicians in the band, including June Gardner (real name Albert Gardner, aka Gentleman June Gardner). The article states June was the drummer in Cooke's last ever backup iteration, but another blog posting on Gardner notes June played mainly with Cooke on live gigs and only did a few recording sessions, so who is the actual drummer is still a mystery. Again, thanks for the lead...

In looking further into Gardner's music, I found this clip of a record he made under his own name which shows a bit more range than the Shake recording. The opening to this clip sounds very similar to the opening Al Jackson used on Redding's version of Shake; since Redding's Shake recording and Gardner's single both came out in 1965, I wonder if it was a case of Gardner hearing Jackson's work and copying it or, perhaps, Jackson hearing Gardner's single and copying the intro,; again, a mystery...

Interesting fact: the great singer/songwriter/guitarist Bobby Womack was in Cooke's band, as noted in your clip; after Sam died, Bobby married Cooke's widow...

Nearly four and half hours long! I'm just over the half way point, the first 20 minutes odd of live recording are a bit poor sound wise but the rest so far is good.
