My Oh My!
What a great patrol over the weekend. I'm on the Asiatic Fleet Boat Campaign with a S-18 boat in Dec. 1941. Got orders to patrol the Linguyan Gulf. Reached there and found the BIGGEST Convoy I've ever seen? 1- Large Old Passenger Carrier, 1- Large Modern Tanker, 2- Large Modern Composite Freighters and about 20 escorts- Subchasers and DDs and 1 Light Cruiser. Well, we all know the Mk. 10 has a range of 3500 yards max. so that meant up close and personal. The convoy was over 14000 yards away and 45 degees AOB. So, the old DJFL ran his boat on surface at 2/3 speed until I got to 9000 yards and then went periscope depth. The escorts came after me! I hit deep dive and went as deep as I could all silent running. At about 4000 yards from the Passenger Carrier I went PD and hit Ahead Flank, all hands battlestations. Swerving here and there to avoid DC I reached about 500 yards and sent 2 torps. All hit and she listed a bit and sailed away. No time, next one torp found a Large Freighter. A hit! Limping away. Another Freighter- last torp and another hit. Lucky for me the ships were sailing in tandem. So it's taking the realistic reload time forever so hit deep dive and silent and lost the escorts. 10 minutes later received reports that all three ships went down! Yippeeee!!!
Managed to dodge the escorts for 2 hours. Surfaced when clear and radioed in. Another order to patrol Southern Formosa. Ok. Sailing North of Aparri and found a smaller TF composed of 1 big juicy Seaplane Tender and 3 Subchaser escorts. They were parrallel to me going North. I was heading South. Timed them and made a right angled turn and submerged to 200 feet. Waited for an eternity until I judged the distance and PD I went. Sent 4 torps and only 1 hit. Staying at PD and goind Ahead Flank the escorts hungry for blood I waited for the 1st reloaded torp and when ready hit the ship again. She's zig-zagging like mad going 27 knots. Me like a guppy going after a Great White Shark! Finally she began to list. The Coup-de-Grace came with the final torp. She keeled over in a nice explosion! The escorts were good and spent the next 3 hours dodging them. Got away and went to Java. Got a Silver Star and 2 weeks of needed R & R. The convoy I met was HUGE at Linguyan Gulf but I keep wondering why the convoy's direction is not towards Luzon coast but away? They were a few nm away from the coast. I'm usiing TM, RSRDC and NSM4 and 1 well placed shot can take down a large ship. But it's the best patrol since playing SH4.

I was ordered (USS Grouper) to patrol an area just south of Guam. Once I was done with that I decided to have a peek at Truk to see what may be there. As I apporoached, the weather turned bad. However, it would be how I came away alive. I picked up some slow moving radar contacts as I approached, which I knew were patrols. What I found was surprising to say the least. It was a Fuso BB! I fired all six of my forward tubes at him. Just before launching my torpedoes, a minesweeper started pinging me. I ignore him and press on the attack. Five of the six torpedoes find their target and explode sending this Fuso to the bottom.
As you can see in the second pic, that dumb minesweeper circled around the Fuso. I decided to end this once and for all and launch tube 8 at him. He gets hit in the bow. Even though the armed tugboats show up, I can slip away. Once a little bit away I surface and order flank speed away. Once I reactivate the radar I notice another stationary contact. I use the free cam to investigate. It is a Yamato! I thought about reloading the previous save, but deicded that the Fuso is a very generous runner-up. Once I am a safe distance away I pick up some merchants on radar. It is still bad weather, but I intercept anyway. Am I glad I did! There were was looked like three ships, but were really four. I sank two of them. Can you guess which ones? Even with all the ships, the total tonnage still wouldn't have equaled one Yamato. |
