As a wanna be writer to a real one: Congratulations!

An OT question though. How long did it take you to write it? Just curious. Did you write a bit every day, once a week, did you have any BIG writing sessions? And if I may be so bold, what do you do for a living?

Well, I hope it sells well and that people will enjoy it!

Some years ago, I made a fair amount of money selling yachts and decided it was the moment to go into writing full time. Even though I did get an additional grant, this proved to be economically a disastrous decission. I had calculated that in 5 years I would have something published. Wrong! You can't come in with your first book and compete against the BIG boys in the thriller business (Ask Clancy). Finally, I gave up and went with a small press with ambitions.

While working on Kingmaker, I wrote for a minimum of 5 hours a day. It took me 4 months to write the first draft. Then, a virus attacked my computer and I didn't have Kingmaker backed up. So, it took me another 3 months to rewrite it. 9 Drafts later, I thought the book was ready to submit.

I did get a literary agent who wasted my time for 18 months wanting to sell a smaller book of mine to get me in the market. Finally, I fired him.

Light Sword picked me up about a year ago, and Kingmaker went through two full edits. So the book was revised 11 times. Total time from the moment I asked myself what would happen to a CIA agent who refused to modify a report to suit a political agenda to today is a little over five years.

I don't recmmend the writer's life to anyone. But, if you must write, never give up.

Thank you for your advice. We're not all built to work Balzac style (got the poor guy a hearth attack ).

I know what you mean about drafts. Even if I have to write short stories for English lessons (about 1-2 pages), I go over it a couple of times and if I made changes everytime I though they were needed,... Let's just say the thing would most probably get to around 3-4 if not more pages long. It's the time constraint that bothers me. Even though I have time Friday afternoons, I can't myself to write, as I know that it would take me about 1000 years just to make the first draft. The problem is, I have plenty of ideas in short drafts (talking about trilogies). Yeh I know, saying is one thing, writing it is another. But to be honest, my biggest problem is that I get my best ideas/chapters/characters/events/everything when I'm not thinking about school. I usually work out a nice chapter if I want to when I walk to school or before I go to bed. Too bad people would think I've gone crazy if I talked out loud on the streets (So I mumble )

Well, if I get the time, I'll be sure to pick a copy of your book next time I order something from Amazon.

I'm sure you've got another book hidden up your sleave

Best of luck!

Fogh, there are no neutral Irish ships in Kingmaker. You won't have any trouble reading it
