The F4U 1 was the "Birdcage" model

The F4U 1a incorporated the "blown" hood with two frames across the top. Plus it also had more modifications to improve the design, and also used a triangular shaped wedge about 8 inches long on the leading edge of the starboard[?] wing to make both wings stall at the same time so it was easier to land on a carrier deck. The oleo struts on the main landing gear had to be worked out to eliminate the bounce that plagued the early models, but was eventually worked out on the 1a model.
