I know what you're talking about too. It was a round building that looked like a big silo. I forgot the name too. As I recall, it was a bunker.

This thing was and still is a big building and from what I know it was pretty well equipped, had shops etc. I saw a documentary about the building and the people didn't have to leave to building to vote, they could do that downstairs.

Building on that picture is one of seven sky-scrapers (Сталинские высотки Stalin's hights) built in 40-50's - they've once formed architectural "face" of our city . Among them University, Foreign Office. This one exactly is an apartment building - it is situated on Kotelnicheskaya quay. Just where Yauza river meets Moscow river.

As for apartment buildings with everything in itself - there are hundreds of them in Moscow - Golden Keys I and II, Vorobievy Gory, House on Begovaya, Copernic etc. Practically every one apartment complex of business-class and higher has shops, kindergardens, and so on...

The first one of that kind was the ugliest building ever built - Dom na Naberezhnoy (House on quay).

It was built in 1927 for party's members - to have them all in one place And in 30's 700 of 2000 of it's inhabitants were arrested.
This building had contained everything in it - shops, laundry etc. One of most famous Moscow theaters - Театр Эстрады is here and also this complex contains a constructivism masterpiece - Udarnik Cinema.
But also there are secret holes and tunnels between flats and apartments to provide easy spying for inhabitants.

Funny thing - it walls had to be red colour - just like Kremlin's which is right on the opposite bank, but due to the lack of funding walls became this god-forbid grey.

Hope that little info would help - if you'll need more - just ask!

Best Regards!

Approximately when was this building constructed? I came across this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narkomfin_Building but assume you might be talking about something more recent. I must say, that considering the building I'm referring to was completed in 1932 it does look like something that shouldn't have been built until the late 1950's - 1960's period. A bit before it's time but ugly all the same.

nikimcbee, are you serious? Though 60-s seem to be the correct time for them.)))

Hmm, probably not what you're looking for but this is a pretty impressive Russian sub base. Could easily withstand a nuclear blast. Takes some time for the images to load.
