Default Is Sins of a Solar Empire any good?

With all this DRM stuff flying around I was thinking of a game I might like to get where I don't have to worry about install limits or the like. I remember hearing about Stardock and their DRM free games. I saw SoSE in the store a couple days ago and thought about it being DRM free. I didn't get the game, though, because I knew nothing about it. I have looked it up and it generally is rated pretty good. I watched some videos and it does look like fun. I'm not interested in online play so how is the single player? I read there is no campaign, but the single player is more like skirmishes. I also see that patch 1.05 can be downloaded alone, but future patches require their Impulse program. What do you think of Impulse? I read that it can archive stuff so you can use it offline (I hope I got that right). I have never played a space game before, so I am completely new at this kind of game (not RTS though).

Well I've got a SOSE copy lying around. I found the game to be a kind of cross between Homeworld (for the space combat) and Civ. But its god awful pacing forced me to delete it, I could play for 2 hours and not really make any progress. I prefer a faster paced RTS game than that.

If you haven't played Homeworld (1 or 2, both are good) I'd recommend that over SOSE anyday.

I have SoSE and really enjoy it. Its a good "start" space sim in the respects that there is very little "building" other than defenses and offenses. It is fairly slow paced, as well as having a limited tech tree. But overall its actually a really fun game, especially when you play with some of the really good user built maps out there.

Thanks guys. I have been reading more of the reviews and user reviews on Amazon. I didn't know there was a demo and got that. It's a bit of a learning curve. I haven't done much yet. I tried a small map and all of a sudden my ships started attacking some scout ship. I barely knew what happened and before I knew it it was all over with! The tutorial helps a little bit, but I may be better off just trying to figure stuff out. The graphics look great, though. The planets and stars look awesome.
