Can searchlights be shot out?

On a ship, yes. On an aircraft, I don't know, I've never tried.

It's easier to hit the searchlight with the flak gun, but don't try it against an armed vessel.

Actually, it is possible to de-light and de-gun some merchant vessels. Once you have plotted their course, simply assume a parallel course, within about 100m of their track, and as their bow passes your stern, blow the tanks. Use the aa to take out their searchlights and guns. This works best at night, but it can be pulled off in the daytime. It obviously doesn't work against convoying ships unless you can eclipse yourself with the merchant's hull. I use this method to save torpedoes when encountering single ships that are armed. The goal is to surface beneath their gun depresssion.

And as far as I know, it is not possible to shoot out the searchlights on aircraft. I have a suspicions that planes are a single model and do not contain destructible parts.

The searchlights on a ship are quite easy to shoot out, just make sure she isn't armed before you try! IT's also easier to shoot them out in calm weather.

As for shooting the light out on an aircraft, are you nuts???? Don't stay on the surface like a deer in the headlights, DIVE! DIVE! DIVE!

Some of us have our honor to protect. I was attacked by a single hurricane and i stayed up on the surface doing 7 knots. He missed! so did I.

Honor? What honor? We hide in the depths and torpedo civilians. Honor is the last thing on my mind.

What's the effective range for those searchlights anyway? I'm currently being stalked by 5 DD's...whenever one leaves another shows up

I'm making plans for a twilight surface escape :hmm:

You could always test it to find out.

If I was able to use the mission editor at all I would...still need to figure the darn thing out. Seems whenever I open it I say "Hell, I could just be playing SH3 instead."

Nope.
Aircraft are multi objects as are ships.

And the Lights are assigned just as search lites on ships.
But hitting JUST the light?
Heck!!
If you hit it you take out a wing!!

I would like to know how so many DD's seem to be so good at pointing their searchlights at your u-boat location while submerged. And, how effective would a searchlight have been to see a u-boat underwater in the Atlantic? I could imagine at periscope depths there may be a chance to spot something in RL, but I've been down to 100m+ and it seems like they are still spotting me.

When you're submerged, they don't spot you with the searchlight, but with hydrophones and asdic.
