I'm new to SH3 and this forum so if these questions have been addressed in other threads please accept my apologies.
I've started a career on a Type II-a boat operating out of Wilhelmshaven on September 1st 1939 and have just successfully completed my first mission, to patrol area AN47 of the North Sea off the coast of Scotland. I now have two questions:- 1. After returning to base how do you go about carrying out repairs to your boat? 2. When I select 'Missions' on the menu screen, looking for my next mission, the only mission available is a repeat of my first. Is this correct or is there (more than likely) something I'm overlooking? Any help from you more experienced captains will be most welcome. Lt.Jurgens |

Hi there,
Welcome to Subsim first off. ![]() All the repairs to the damage you have received in first patrol will be fix automatically so when you start your next mission your boat will be in full working order. Are you just playing out the box stock SH3 or are you playing with any mods installed. If you have any more question feel free to ask away. If i cant give you a answer the will always be someone around here who will have the answer.

Welcome aboard, Herr Leutnant Jurgens.
Your boat is automatically repaired and replenished between missions when you are in your home port . I believe there was an issue some time ago with repeated missions, but thought it had been cured by the later patches, or major mods. I've not met it for ages in SH3, although it was a persistent problem with early SH4. Have you patched SH3 to 1.4b and are you running GWX and SH3 Commander? With SH3 Commander, you can set your own patrol grid and in GWX2, it doesn't really matter, since you don't get renown for reaching your assigned grid and patrolling for 24 hours, so, effectively, you can hunt wherever you wish. |

Thanks for the quick replies guys.
I'm running stock SH3 v1.4 straight out of the box. I've not had chance to study any of the addons yet. I didn't realise repairs were carried out automatically, I was just going from the manual which states "Between patrols you will spend time performing a number of actions; repairing a damaged U-boat after patrol," etc, and from that I assumed you'd have to assign crews to carry out repairs as you do when at sea. Re my second question, was there a problem in the stock version whereby you kept getting assigned to repeats of the same mission? I did wonder if maybe you had to transfer to a new boat to get assigned a different mission. Von Manteuffel, re aquiring renown, I set out on my first patrol with 900 renown points but that went up to over 1400 on my return, and that was just a routine 'Patrol area AN47 for 24hrs' mission. |

I can't recommend highly enough upgrading to GWX2.1. ( If your set up can handle it. You need a fairly hefty rig, especially in the RAM and graphics areas.)
The patches to upgrade the game to 1.4b are readily available.( Ubisoft website ) Then you need to download and install GWX2. Then GWX2.1. Add-in SH3 Commander Finally download and install Jonesoft Generic Mod Enabler ( JSGME). All are very accessible from links from Subsim. After that, the skies the limit: GWX2.1 makes the game look and play an order of magnitude better than stock SH3; SH3 Commander lets you develop your career as a commander, manage your crew etc. JSGME is a way of quickly and simply installing and removing other mods ( there are dozens available. again through links on Subsim) If you want to keep a stock SH3 on your computer, just copy the entire folder and rename it. There's a neat little mod called "Multi SH3" which lets you separate out different installations of the game as far as saving games is concerned. You're starting on an experience and a journey which some of us have been on for years. I truly envy you the delights you have yet to come, just as I look forward to and enjoy the continuing development of the SH series by the most dedicated and able team of modders in the world. Best wishes, Von M. |

SH3 is not a mission based game, and you won't get any other kind of mission. The only change will be the sector you will be assigned to patrol. Of course, once you complete your mission's objective, don't return to base, but stay at sea as long as you have torpedoes and fuel left. You don't have to stay in your assigned grid, you have the freedom to go anywhere you want (a freedom of choice that the real world u-boat captains didn't have). You can use the map provided with the game to plan your patrol in order to sink as many ships. Searching this forum can also point you in the right direction for best hunting grounds. I would suggest you to complete a patrol or two with the stock game, to get yourself customized with the controls and the game in general, and to install GWX 2.1. It will give you a much satisfying experience of an u-boat kaleun. BTW, welcome aboard!

Thanks for all of your replies and advice.
I thought some of the sea and sky effects on the stock SH3 were pretty realistic, so if as you say the various patches and mods improve it further then it sounds like I'm in for a treat. I can see this becoming a very absorbing simulation which will keep me busy over the dark winter months. Once again thank you all for your assistance. Lt.Jurgens |

Once you have completed the patrol try steaming to a Port on the UK east coast,Hartlepool is quite fun and its usually only patroled by a single ASW Trawler and sometimes a MTB.Tied up alongside are several freighters just shouting "SINK ME!".However i did find a wee problem, when i was attacked with DC's by the Trawler, after some minutes it mysteriously self destructs.......and YES SH3 crashes. So i forgot the Trawler and hammered down to Hull and sank a few freighters and schooners.
I also echo the reccomendation to install the GWX mod and the SH Commander,it blows the game wideopen and improves it no end,you WILL be amazed and astounded by it!Hope this helps.

You can be assigned the same patrol grid if your next patrol date is very close to the last ones end
How many days are you spending in port ? Cant remember stock days |

WELCOME ABOARD!

You will soon learn that the manual is the least informative way to learn the game. Yes, you spend time making repairs, but only because making repairs adds to the time spent in port. The more damage, the more time. Quote:
Play a career or at least a few patrols in stock, then start looking at the mods. It's a whole different game.

Thanks everyone for all your helpful comments and suggestions. I've just started my second patrol and am going to take Sailor Steve's and Meduza's advice, run a few stock patrols to get a feel for how things work, and then take a look at the mods so that I can appreciate the difference they make. Thanks again folks.
