Is my DVD-RW ruined?

I forgot about this until a few minutes ago when I was erasing my DVD-RWs. Awhile back I had some files on one of my DVD-RWs. I wanted to remove something so I booted up Nero to see if that were possible. I was surprised to see that Nero permitted the erase. When I took the disc out I looked at the back and noticed a burn like mark on the edge of the disc. Later on I decided to erase the whole thing and had Nero do a full erase (physical erase). The mark is still there. If I want to use the disc in the future will that hamper my doing so? Will it still be usable albeit at a lower capacity? What does it mean that the disc is physically erased anyway?

I may try that some other time. I was just hoping someone could speak from experience doing the same thing.

That's not a burn mark, but a manufacturing flaw!

By the way, CD's/DVD's burn from the inside out, so just limit yourself to 3 .5 GB and you will miss that mark entirely.

That mark never showed up until I had did that partial erase I mentioned above. I had used the disc before, but never did what I did above. When I erase them I always do the full erase and when done I check the back. Are you saying that I should have been able to do the partial erase and no mark should have been left behind?

Now that I have my external enclosure, it won't be hard to stay below 3.5 GB.

I doubt I will even use the discs anymore. I was just curious if I ruined my disc. The external enclosure is just so much easier and faster.

Exactly - the defect didn't show up until it was hit with a small amount of heat. That is why you didn't notice it before. It is a manufacturing flaw. Looks like the thin film is separating from the plastic backing.

A little CD trivia - the top side of a CD is much more vulnerable to irreparable damage than the bottom side that the laser shines through. Most people don't know that. The plastic on the top is much thinner.

I keep them in my desk. It definitely didn't get heat warped in my desk. I keep very old CD-RWs in there and they haven't been affected. Actually they are at the bottom of the pile (each disc has its own case).

Actually, discs can make lethal ninja stars. One day I got bored and used some tin snips to cut it into a star. I used tin snips because they were sitting right there. However, I think there are better tools that would cut the disc cleaner. The edges were sharp and strong, though!

When it comes to CD ROM disks, why both reusing it if you have any doubts.

Blank CD Rom disks cost about $0.20?

I say fling this disk accurately at the nearest trash can and get another disk.

Data is worth much more than the cost of the disk these days.

If I get a broken disk....
1 see if I can salvage it
2 if not I do one of two (or both)things.
3 I use it as a decorative coaster.
4 I throw it at a wall untill it busts.
