I realize a scenario for modern subs would have to be fictitious, but if well thought out dynamic and realistically believable campaign were made I certainly wouldn't have a problem with it. Dangerous Waters was ok, but there was only so much I could take from scripted missions all the time. There was no incentive to play them again. Not only that, but you always started in the thick of the action. I want to start at base, go on patrol to find my own action, and then return to base. I didn't like those little playable "squares" DW placed you on.

Other modern naval combat games have not done that good and ubisoft doesn't have a history of success in this arena. It's largely the momentum of many years producing the SH franchise with extraordinary loyalty by the fans which has kept SH alive. They would be going into modern warfare cold, which would not only be risky, but probably fail. Since warships no longer fire on each other in recent war examples, it's hard to come up with enough history and intrigue to interest all but a very small portion of the war sim community. All battles would be what iffs with little real world examples to back them up. Remember Harpoon? Many years in development. It also had the advantage of many years of faithful followers. When it came to putting it in 3D with models, complete failure. This prooves that even a loyal fan base is not enough to get investors to put in the cash necessary to make a competitive game which might have low sales. The other example mentioned "Dangerous Waters" has also not done well even though it too was largely based on previous game releases.

Modern day subsims are sensor battles, which can be quite interesting if you love it...but you have to place them in a 'WorldWar3' scenario to make it interesting..
The thing i really love about for instance Red Storm Rising is stalking the big boomers, trying to attack them and sink them before its escort arrives. It can be quite a challenge.. Some other things come up to mind...you wont see the sun for a couple of months and call me romantic but sailing my boat into a beautifull sunset while listening to some sweet tunes by the Andrews Sisters can be quite relaxing...yeah i know ![]() Like i said before just make a subsim with a timeline so we can sail what we want! |
