i was really disappointed...i drove all the way across illinois (i live about half hour from mississippi) to find some monstrous speakerbox with flashing lights.....its horrible.

however, the security gaurd knew his stuff about U-boats, and the tour guide made it relatively interesting....they even have a footlong model in the gift shop(s)

try the periscope and dive simulator...its really fun...bring a friend!

Sad thing is, I don't believe they allow photos to be taken INSIDE of the U-505.

More info:

http://www.msichicago.org/

http://www.hnsa.org/ships/u505.htm

A true unique boat the U-505 is!
  • The only German U-boat museum in the USA
  • Is one of only five remaining class IX-C U-boats in the world
  • The only submarine on display inside (under) a building in the USA
  • Boarded and captured from the Germans on June 4, 1944, the only foreign enemy man-of war done so since the War of 1812

What? I thought there are only two, U-505 and U-534 formerly in Birkenhead, UK :hmm: Where are the other three?

Or are you meaning one of the last five german WW2 U-Boats remaining, including U-995 (Type VII) and U-2540 (Type XXI)...still an unidentified one missing :hmm:

Don't take the "L", I tried that once and thought I would be killed by some of the less savory people of the southside. If you are staying at the Palmer house then walk to the South shore(Metra) RR station( about 10 minute walk) and take that the to the stop for the Museum.

There is also a nice pre-owned book store in the area of the above station. I think it is called Powell's

The last one you can find in Finland:
This is what I found on uboat.net...

The submarine Vesikko which can be considered a prototype of the German IIA class (6 built). The boat was converted into a military museum in 1959 and can be found at the island of Suomenlinna.

There are more pictures of this one somewhere on the web...

groetjes,

Gino

Gino cleared that right up. That's what happens when I retype what I read.

If youre staying downtown its a realtively cheap cab ride to the museum or take the Jeffrey #6 bus (the bus is so expensive in Chi now like $2.50 each way its hardly worth it if your not a daily commuter if your a tourist you realy wont miss that extra money by the end of the day. ) Get there early since they only have so many tours per day. When i was in town last I couldnt get in since I waited till afternoon to get there.

Im originally from Chi and have seen the boat a hundred times over the years (always enjoyed it !) but I was bummed out to have missed the new tour in the really cool display. I last saw her on the last weekend in the original display, and they just let people go through unguided (for a fee of course) I got to take my time and take pics and remember the many times I got my Dad to take me on the tour back in the day.

Have fun its well worth the money.
