I'm still dreaming of a war-long career which starts small, gets the IX to stock up on renown, survives through '43 and '44 with a fully upgraded VIIC and ends in my very own XXI. Of course, I usually die of stupidity somewhere in '42 in a IX of some description. *must remember it's not a nimble agile VII*

Was what I thought would happen to me too, had I changed into a bigger type now But then I usually die of stupidity somewhere in early '40 in a canoe

So I went and got me a brand spanking new VIIC instead. Convoys beware

Oh, and thanks of course for your insights and opinions guys! Most informative as always
Damn!! It was just starting to get interesting....all the differing views on each sub type

I love my IXb i finally made my first 100k patrol with 100% reality minus external camera enabled. Now i go for true 100% without any mods spoiling it. I wasnt that successful still using the VIIb.

Taskforce which hunted the bismark i fired 2 eals each

Omw back i stumbled over a taskforce with 1 carrier (which i took out with a full spread), 2 southhamptons and escorts

out of eals i took the last victim by artillery to get over the finishline

I prefer the IXb over a VIIb at any time since i usually prefer close combat so the sig doesnt matter to me with my current playstile.

But there's always the _next_ time around, isn't there? Can't for the life of me imagine sitting out the war in this boat, as much as I like the Type VII... one has to progress in order not to regress, no

1942????

I normally die of stupidity a lot earlier than that! Like 9th August, 1939, returning from my pre-war 'shake-down' cruise and being lost in a collision with 'something' in the Straits of Dover!

Oh! The shame of it all....:rotfl:

and whats the point of a IX running with decks awash and losing the range that you upgraded for in the first place???
I guess it depends on your definition of exaggeration. IIRC you're looking at 32 seconds versus 27. That's not an earth-shattering difference. And if you want fast diving time, a Type XI will travel the same distance as a VII, with decks away, and dive at 15 seconds. That is a MUCH bigger difference than a standard VII-IX comparison. So if diving time is your key requirement, a Type IX still wins out.

But hey, you've got a few hours under your belt and I'm sure you know what works best for you. Right now, as much as I miss my IXB, I'm sure enjoying my new XXI!

-We shall engage these british escorts!
-erm sir we will have turned around some time next monday, could i persuade you to go deep and silent?
-it matters not! i said we shall engage and engage we shall! what? why is all that water rushing into the boat?

...which, OTOH, can happen in a VII too I've noticed

No, I'm not dead yet. Just noticing the increased vigilance of the RAF (or maybe the Royal Navy Air Corps?) because of them buggers almost sinking us immediately after leaving Thalia... and it's only autumn '41 we're talking about

No matter however. We, being the nonchalant gentlemen that we are, just slipped-and-slided away to a friendly-ish port nearby, followed with us hoping for the boat to be fixed soon(ish)... well, at least as soon as we'd finished with our decadent port-side distractions already, of course

Funny thing, this Kaleuning business. You'd almost think the Tommies really want to sink yer a**, eh?!

:hmm:
