And it is wrong and I don't understand why. There are lots of good British dishes, fro Haggis, which made properly is nice, to Lancashire Hotpot, toad in the hole. A good British casserole. I could go on.

Personally although I know that proper French cooking, and I mean the country stuff is really good and similar to British country fare, the stuff we see over here is the nouvelle cuisine crap with a small piece of food covered in a sauce and a couple of twigs of lettuce.

I have heard French complain that our food isn't fancy, with different sauces etc. Well as I read once, UK food didn't have to have fancy sauces because the natural ingredients - meat, vegetables etc - due to our climate and soil were so good. Unlike their stuff. So come to the UK and I'll show you some good UK food.
Home cooked is good everywhere I ment the industrial and fast food, that to my understanding has a bigger role in UK than elsewhere in Europe.
Too fancy food is to me like playing with food, not good.

Aah yes, guide to British and American idioms, number 143

I'm out to smoke a fag

I think Mr Oliver has a point, but I don't think hes making it for any other reason than to raise his waning media profile.

As to British food, I don't think it is the fact that there isn't any good British food about (IMO the best of British food can match top cuisine from anywhere else); its the fact that the British public has a love affair with cheap low quality supermarket produce, processed rubbish and junk food. Something which I think is a real shame because as Steed rightly points out there is a rich food heritage in the UK and IMO it is often overlooked. I think if shoppers demanded better quality, preferably locally produced food and were prepared to pay for good stuff then I think we would eat a lot better than we do. I think things are improving on that front.

Most supermarket food is tasteless or disgusting or so full of fat & salt you need private health insurance to cover you in case you fall ill. I now eat a lot of veg and fish and enjoy preparing the food to make a very tasty meal. We have a big problem with fast food and supermarket micro wave foods in this country, people are just plain lazy to make the effort to make there own meals.

The government is always digging in the knife on fat people but on the whole the British diet is dreadful and you don't need to be fat to have a poor diet. The fact is, here in the UK the only time we were healthy was during the second world war on rations but you could eat all the veg you wanted.

Here is the famous Woolton pie from 1941 and I'm going to give it a go next week.
