Modsters- How many fathoms of smelly stuff am I in?

Ahoy Skippers,

As I am currently sailing from the Norwegian Fjords, some of my patrols are based in Icelandic waters and I had not realised last night, as with two of those damned yankee destroyers hunting me, I was unable to ask the navigator to check the depth under the keel, but kept getting minor damage; just how shallow the water is there.

I have felt before that one thing that is lacking in the SH series, are good charts that like in the real world, beside showing the land and indicate the ocean depth by colour changes, do actually give some numerical indication of depths.

Is there a way, or maybe there is already a way that somebody could share, that one of those experts in building Mods, could give us, that like in some other packages that I have used, when you roll the mouse over the chart, there is a visual numerical indication, as to the depth of the water? I know that depth decreases as you reach land, or some underwater mountain, but it is not always desirable to broadcast my position to every warship in 10 miles of my boat.

can anybody help?

John

Well, not entirely lacking in the SH series, as poor old SH2 would give you the depth as you passed the cursor around the map.

But, even the best charts weren't always accurate, and the ones that were weren't always available to everyone, especially ones that weren't of known harbors.

And the best charts and the best equipment and the best sattelite imagery didn't keep a modern nuclear sub from ramming one of those undersea mountains not to long ago.

But I agree: charts with some soundings on them would be nice.

Thanks Sailor,

It was SHII, that was the one that I was grasping for.

Depth contours or numbers on the map would be best. But since they are not there you might aswel do the ping-thing. Those destroyers are very overdue on their earwax to be de-waxed. Not realistic, but so is leaving port without good maps too.

the ingame map is a no go methinks.

i asked a while back if anyone had a better one...but i think its a hard coded thing from the original...pity.

Yes the SH3 Nav Map can be edited, it's only a RAW file after all. Will it be done? Doubtful, as too much info to add to be beneficial.

However, why not just swap the draggable map (top left corner) for a chart showing depths? Infact, why not make a JSGME regional version, so if you're patrolling the North Sea, enable a NS Depth chart etc blah.....you can enable/disable this whenever as it's only a TGA file, so you move to another area, you enable a different chart.

One thing though. SH3 depth contours bear no resemblance to Real Life at all. But nice immersion.

Me, busy?
To put depth info on the nav map?

I don't think it could be done in a way that would be helpful and still look neat and tidy.

As I remember isn't there this little box with light blue to blue colors showing a certain depth? On the Nav map?

If in doubt, ask the navigator. The AI never hear your pings.

I think in another thread recently, the revered Kpt. Lehmann bemoaned the fact that the A.I. doesn't react to the depth-finding ping - So ping away. They don't hear it.
