I know nothing about modern carriers, but ww1/2 carriers often had booms and
wires that look a little like that to catch any aircraft that fall off the deck.

Curb Feelers on cars? I learn something new each day!

They look like radio antennas to me. :hmm:

I've never heard of or seen a 'curb feeler' either.

There are 6 or more the whole length of the ship. No wires between them, so I was wrong in my wild guess.

Those are radio antennae. The fold down when launching planes and can point up when needed.

The thing on the car is a curb feeler. When I was a kid in the '50s everybody had them. They aided with parallel parking and kept you from scraping your lovely hubcaps.

Why would they position them so low? Ultra-high frequency Near Vertical Incident Skywave (NVIS) transmission? Does the hull of the carrier itself not impair electromagnetic propogation? Does the reactor's shielding cause interference?

Explain, please. I'm lost.

As above, they are antenna. The british during WW2 had a similar looking thing that was used for parking aircraft, it created more deck space. It fell out of use as aircraft got heavier and tricycle undercarriage took over from tail wheels.

Thanks guys....thats been bugging me for years.

AS far as not having heard of Curb Feelers....I guess you dont get too many Pimp-mobiles over in the UK...LOL.

Most of the cars that have them over here are ridiculously pimp'd out monstrosities which is why the notion of them on carriers was kinda funny.
