Well, the best American submarine movie ever.
Well, the best American submarine movie made during the war. Well, the best American submarine movie of 1943. Well, actually it wasn't all that great, but it was a pretty good popcorn flick for the time. "YES! It's a direct hit! It's nineteen forty-three's biggest hit! The thrilling and awe-inspiring technicolor epic... CRASH DIVE! The screen's most vivid, most graphic picturization of the breath-taking drama and heart-stirring heroism of the men who man America's submarines, and the women who wait for them! A story written in steel, and fire, and daring. Crash Dive! Blazing with pulse-pounding action! Sparkling with joyous romance! Roaring with exciting adventure! Filmed in glorious techicolor, with authentic reality, at the United States submarine base at New London, Connecticut!" This is one I had never seen before, and I picked it up on a whim out of the $5 bin at Wal-Mart. The Bad: A plot every bit as preposterous as U-571, about a US submarine in the Atlantic, first sinking a German Q-Ship and then sneaking into and attacking a secret German supply base in Greenland!:rotfl: Plus the usual silly subplot of two officers in love with the same girl. One fan at IMDB.com noted many similarities with the British-made We Dive At Dawn, released at the same time, which I still haven't seen. The Good: It was filmed in 1943, at New London. It won the 1943 Oscar for best special effects, and they are good for the time. When Tyrone Power is skippering a PT boat, it's an early ELCO 77-footer. I loved that part. ![]() ![]() It was said to have been filmed on USS Mackerel or Marlin, but nobody seems to know for sure. ![]() And, when there is a shot of boats backing away from the pier, one of them is a Sugar boat! ![]() ![]() The black steward, played by Ben Cook, gets some good lines. He's the COB's best friend and looks after his ailing chief, and also comes to the rescue of Tyrone Power in a crucial scene. Not a great movie to be sure, but well worth watching for the period color sub and ship scenes. ![]()

NOooooooooooo
Friends don't let friends watch Crash Dive Crash Dive 1945 Tyrone Power Dana Andrews Ann Baxter Not so much a sub story but a love story and a pretty awful one at that. Dana Andrews is the Captain of a submarine. Tyrone Power is the new exec. Dana is engaged to Ann. Tyrone puts the smooth moves on Ann. Why does Ann not tell Tyrone that she is engaged? Because she is a tramp! Both men are doing the same woman and guess what, they soon find out they are both doing the same tramp. Tensions mount and finally Dana gives the tramp to Tyrone Thats pretty much the movie. Oh by the way, there are a few scenes on a Sub. Friends don't let friends watch "Crash Dive" I would rather watch U-571.... twice ![]()

:p :p :p :p :p
Shows what you know - it's 1943, not 1945!:p Dana isn't engaged to Ann - he hasn't asked her yet!:p Ann tells Tyrone several times that she doesn't want to see him, but he just won't give up!:p Nobody is "doing" anybody, because it's 1943 and she's a nice virginal schoolteacher. Even the schoolgirls think it's funny! She's not a tramp, she's just confused. And she doesn't know they know each other, and neither of them knows she knows the other one!:p I said it wasn't that good, but if you want to argue about it, I win hands down! Why? Just look at those pictures! U-571 doesn't have anything to compare with that! Real life beats CGI every time!:p Oh, and did I mention ":p "? :rotfl:

I have Crash Dive on DVD and I agree with others, it's worth a watch for the subs if nothing else. As Sailor Steve mentions, the special effects were good for the time and overall it's not a bad film, but personally it's not one that I would put in my top ten. There is also a large slice of propaganda/patriotism expressed during the film, but this is to be expected for a film made during the war years.

Great movie. I've got tht one on DVD. I also have:
Run Silent, Run Deep (can't have a fleet boat movie collection without that one) Up Periscope (lots of great fleet boat footage around the deck and conning tower) U-571 (yeah, OK, I know, but at least there's an S-boat, sort of...) Hell Cats of the Navy (with Ronald Reagan) Operation Pacific (staring the Duke) My favorite? Probably a tie between Run Silent, Run Deep and Up Periscope. The skipper in Up Periscope is sort of an anti-hero, by the book man, and comes across as a real person trying to balance command responsibility and adherence to orders with the morale of his crew.

The U-571 hating is so tiresome....
![]() Exact realism isn't a necessity. A bonus perhaps....But it's an entertaining film from start to finish. It's no Das Boot, but its a good flick. Run Silent Run Deep is my fave....

Not American or WWII, but for sheer creepiness I don't think you can beat K-19 The Widowmaker, I've worked in RCs before on RN boats in harbour and that film just scares the cr@p out of me.
