Where DW really shines is Multiplayer games.
While that mission is quite good and is dynamic enough that it should play out differently each time, it's still a tactical scenario... not the total war campaign that the previous poster had in mind.

While it's theoretically possible that you could create a whole multiplayer campaign in DW in a single mission, it would be impractical to play because of the transit distances requires without the use of time lapse; also consider the rate of disconnects and CTDs with no way from dropped players to log back on.

If you want DW to represent a campaign, the only way to do it that approaches being practical, is to have a human being manage the big picture and create DW matches that are representative of the tactical battles the big picture leads to.

About the dynamic campaign issue, Silent Hunter 2 didn't have one and nonetheless some intrepid modder (or modders) did one (I think you can still download the mod from subsim).
Why can't we make something similar with DW ?
There is no need to have a dynamic campaign that spans the whole world, concentrate on a specific theater, like a china vs taiwan scenario. With american and russian subs also. Something like that. We have a powerfull editor, and if I'm not mistaken there is also the possibilty to playback videos from the breifing screen (like in sub command) so why can't we do it ?

Everything I said above applies to a campaign that spans a threatre instead of the globe.

I've thought about to create a mission generator (external java tool) and even started coding. But it's a huge project for me alone (in my spare time), so I don't know, if it will ever be 'useful'.
Why creating a tool and don't use the editor? The editor is good but a generator has more possibilities like creating specific mission doctrine files, more randomization and automates tedious things like triggers to simulate message traffic and so on.

The next step could be a campaign generator (technically not a problem). But to be honest: I don't think, that this will be happen. I'd be happy to have a generator, which is more varied and sophisticated than the original quick mission generator.

LOL! Are you saying you've gotten married TG? If so, congrats!

If you need to flex your multiplayer muscles, I'd be happy to help out...I still need to get you back for that deep diving Sierra II tactic you used on me!

I haven't played for quite some time, but I've recently become hooked on modern subs again after a period of WWII/Aviation interest so I definately plan on getting back in the game! The only thing currently foiling me is a Vista problem involving speech recognition, which starts whether I want it to or not and screws up performance.

I am having the same issue... I guess I have to configure SR to get it to shut up

Damn! Forum is just the way I left it! Almost no changes whatsoever
Not so long ago I had SC & DW with all possible mods, but my brother "accidently" deleted all of it, so I didnt botherd to reinstall everything since then. I also dual boot Ubuntu/XP so I spend alot of time in the linux corner. Go open source!

Since Dangerous Waters is not copy protected, have you tried playing dw through wine and or cedega under linux ?
I'm wondering if it would work. :hmm:
The faster I can play my favorite games under linux/unix the faster I'll ditch windows xp.

As far as I remember somebody posted on this here forum a long time ago about his success with DW under wine. I think the only issue he had left at that time was the sound (if I remember right), but basically the game worked. Might give it a try ... I do have Ubuntu 8.04 LTS on my laptop and maybe I'll try it out in the next days myself (have to figure out Wine first).

Default DW

I still play a mission every now and then. This game will stay on my HD for now.
I agree that a more dynamic campaign would be a plus.
Obviously (and fortunately I would say) no real fleet boat mod is available otherwise we would all sit in the middle of a radioactive desert.
The modding of DW has unfortunately more or less stopped, maybe due to the limitations of the game proper or due to lack of interest by the community.
Thanks ot all who have devoted time and efforts to make the gameplay better.

Well, I just got it, driving the 688i only because I am familiar with how it worked in the previous two titles, carefully evaluating the jobs the auto-sonar and auto-TMA guys do (so far not too hot). Basically I got bored with the SH series (for the moment) and wanted something with more tactical "meat"...

i stopped playing when the modding started. That killed the game but that's just my personal opinion.

No what was going to kill the game was the absense of modding and bug fixing.
Lwami improved realism and corrected some bugs and made the game much more challenging to play.
So I really don't understand your criticism.
Nowadays you can find several mods, ranging from "legal" to not so legal ones, but the game is still going strong.
