That was the only thing I thought it was missing too... building your own ships is cool. I gotta go look at the website and see if anything has come out of the modding community with regard to ship building. I'd be content to build ships and import them, I wasn't always happy with how that ship builder thing worked anyway.

Maybe someday we'll be able to play a space sim that allows for flying from space to planet surface, and actually landing and/or docking. I sorta hate those "dock" buttons... The best one I've played with regard to spaceflight is Freelancer. I love the way you can see a planet waaaaay off in the distance and then you jump into a trade lane and you start warping toward it and you can actually see it getting closer. Cruise engines are cool too... you don't need to take a trade lane, you can actually fly to a planet if you don't mind it taking awhile.

Incidentally, today you can find Freelancer for $10 at Target amongst the bargain software section (those disk only racks).

Galactic Civilizations II sounds more my style. I believe i played the first one many moons ago and I remember decking out my own ships! Though probably not as many ship otions way back when as there is now! And best of all - No copy protection once again!

I see I can buy it new for $9.58 from Amazon!

I don't usually play with mods in SoSE - so I can't recommend any good ones. However - there are some GREAT maps out there - and the map builder is a breeze to use. Also - I guess its just me being a real stickler - but I only play "Go Big or Go Home" style games. Defenses are allowed, but offensive for me is cap ship only.

Wow.. The AI is a real wanker in this one, isn't it? Started a big map game with one easy economist AI to learn the game. First hour went without any contact apart from few scout ships here and there, so I got to expand and build in peace. Then I found this pirate outpost and went to tackle it with way too small fleet of two caps and some 5 light frigates. I though the AI wouldn't attack and I had craploads of resources to rebuild my fleet after that. Well, shortly after the pirate battle the tosser AI attacked two of my colonies simultaneously with huge fleets. Of course, I had no defenses as I though the AI would just chill and build their economy and leave me alone.

The AI cheats like mad in that game. They start with more stuff and as a result can expand a lot faster. The only fortunate thing is they tend to split up their forces. Pirates can also be real cheap, on one map they had a fleet bigger (and tougher) then anything I could possibly muster. I also didn't like how fleet maintenance was handled, as a fixed percentage regardless of how many ships you have (don't work on that tech unless you need it and can support the credit crunch).

I have to say I much prefer the Master of Orion series to GalCiv. I find GalCiv to be very dull, and I hate the hands off combat.

Sins is unique in its fleet maintenance - just research what you need at the time.

I too think the best game was Moo - and Moo2. Moo3 really was a failure for me - to arcane. If you like the Moo games - you should try Imperium Galactica 2 - its old as all get out but still pretty good.

Ya I agree, though moo3 with mods is pretty good too. Anyhow I'll see if I can get my hands on IG2 and try it out, it looks interesting.

Dowly - and anyone else who doesn't care for the economic impact of the fleet management of SoSE. Just remember that SoSE if VERY ammendable to modding. You can adjust the techs easily on everything from cost and time to the actual impact it has. In other words - "free" fleet upkeep is rather easy to make happen.

As for IG2 - I just reinstalled it myself. I do know there is an XP patch that is needed - haven't actually tried to run it on this 7 box - but I don't expect problems with it.

Now if I could only get Descent to work with my joystick.... Now there is a game than needs to be remade!

Ya, was reading the modding forums, seems easy enough. Might even have a shot at making new models.

Discounted on Impulse. Strongly suggest picking it up if you have even the slightest interest. Can't go wrong for $10,-.

* ah, also note that makes it $10,- for each piece; original game, entrenchment and diplomacy. $30,- total, compared to $40,- for the all-in-one trinity pack.

This game rocks when played online. I may get the trinity pack but it's always the problem of whether the game's stocked.

Imo the gameplay is so much superior than in GC2.

The only gripe is there's so many races and ships. They should've made more ships and races.
