I love those spooky gunships

I know of a story where in the Vietnam war a USAF O2 spotter plane was shot down by the main guns of a US battleship... That was pure bad luck ofcourse. Must have left a mess though

I'm not sure if the Battleships shells would explode on impacting a small aircraft?
:hmm:

Those are some pretty hardy shells!

Depending on which type were fired,

Some explode with an altimeter.
AKA Aerial burst.

Some penetrate into the ground a ways.
They leave very nice swimming holes!!

Most likely passed through the aircraft and never noticed!!

Even with out an explosion, the structural damage is going to be terrible.
Think less a hot knife through butter, more a bullet through butter!

The Yamoto's AA shells where 2,998lb each. Each was filled with 900 incendiary tubes
(thermite) and 600 steel bolts.
The shell exploded after a timed fuse and sent the steel bolts and thermite out in a 20
degree cone. Each thermite stick left a flame about 16ft long in it's wake.

The vast AA weapon was impressive, but impractical and it ruined the rifling in the
gun's barrel.

It might be lame, but I am thinking of a huge shotgun shell for the main bismarck's cannon. I wonder how much airplaine, it can take em down when the swordfish are coming.:hmm:

Yes.
