Default If someone modded a completely "realistic" campaign...

...what would it look like in the game?

No, I'm not a "realism fanatic", and enjoy GWX 2.1 just fine. I just remember some of the GWX devs mentioning that, even after their efforts, that there's a lot more ships and convoys out there than there was in real life. This is just purely for curiousity.

Just mod your sensors.cfg, changing Opportunity Contacts range from 300 (default) to like 4,000. You'll notice, midwar, at least a dozen (probably more) convoys plying the northern convoy lane. I'm currently in the Caribbean, mid-43, and just came across a US convoy, chock full of tankers, protected by 8 escorts, and I wondered if the USN could spare 8 escorts at this stage of the war (granted all that oil is vitally important).

So, if someone were to mod a campaign based strictly on historical parameters, what would we see? Lots fewer convoys and contacts, but with fewer escorts/convoy? Would it make finding targets very difficult and frustrating?

Take a look here:
http://uboat.net/boats/listing.html

Click on any boat. There will be a box that tells how many ships that u-boat sank in her career. There is also a listing of each patrol for that boat, which you can click on to see the region of the patrol and how many ships they sank on that patrol.

It's depressing, really, and I'm not sure even I would be happy with a career like that.

The Third reich comissioned about 1100 u-boats during the war, of which only some 300 were ever able to fire torpedoes against an enemy ship. The counter methods were so effective later in the war, that most u-boats didn't even come close to the enemy.

Try SH4.. then you have an idea.. a vast ocean, with no ship to find..
We are lucky to have GWX, something to shoot at..!

Really? I heard that Germany led the tonnage war (+14 million tonnes) next to the US and UK (I forgot). Last was Japan (+1 million tonnes)
I forgot where I heard those info.

I was under the impression it was a little more than that. (Can't seem to find it again in Padfield's undersea war) but given the sinkings early in the war relative to the small number of operational boats (with no radar) their achievements are astonishing.
Totally in agreement with the latter half of your statement though, by 43 many boats were lost without ever firing a torpedo.
