as far as i know... long range 3 -15 km middle range 1 - 3 km short range less than 1 km

If on the surface you can ask your Watch
Officer for nearest visual contact and if a ship has been sighted he will give you the bearing and range.

A quick look at the Data\Cfg\Contacts file shows:
Short=1000 ;[m] Medium=8000 ;[m] Long=16000 ;[m] I'm using the 16km mod. Oddly, the stock ranges are: Short=1000 ;[m] Medium=3000 ;[m] Long=20000 ;[m]
