Aha, so you mean destroyed equipment is repaired when refitting? That's new to me, been too careful so far
Yeah, like batteries, pumps, engines, periscopes, etc. Holes in the hull remain until you begin a new patrol. I learned all this during mod testing.

yes that is what i am talking about, i play stock sh4 1.5 ubm with no mods and hull damage never gets repaired in port.

damage above the waterline (bullet holes in deck plates and conning tower) should get repaired by your crew while in port.

not all damage is repairable and i dont expect it to be but minor hull damage should be repaired, as it stands the only remedy i have found is a new career.

No hull damage gets repaired regardless of how minor the damage. Unfortunately in reality a Dry Dock is required to make those kinds of repairs. If you want, I can make a small mod so just your hull doesn't get damaged at all. Everything else will remain the same.

well for me personally im not that interested in using a mod to remove hull damage from happening but i think a mod like that would be very good when learning evasion so you can practice without dying until you get good at it.

but i would like to occassionally play with a mod to reduce the damage levels for smaller weapons like machine guns.

That can be done too. Using the Silent Editor, just open the .zon files in the Submarine folders. Open the file of the sub you wish to edit. Within each selection is a damage zone labeled as a sphere or box. All you need to do is edit the ArmorLevel in each sphere and box selection. If you exceed 100, the armor becomes impervious to all weapons fire. Armor with a 100 rating can still be damaged, but small rounds fire will do virtually no damage to the hull so long as it isn't excessive.

it has been since sh3 and gwx1.1 the last time i did any real modding attempts so just how detailed can you get with that?

can you say make just the attack periscope 10% tougher to damage without effecting anything else?

Yes. I had a periscope problem at one time but after some trial and error, I was able to figure out the mechanics behind it.

I have sustained some pretty heavy damage, but I have never had to start a new career to continue playing. If my pressure hull is damaged, the crew may be able to get it repaired enough to make it back to the closest port for refueling so I can make it back to my home port (IF, and only IF, I don't have to dive beyond periscope depth).

Once refueled, I can usually make it back to my home port where I 'End Patrol'. My boat then goes into drydock (supposedly), and major damage is repaired. I'm then given orders, and continue my career with my next patrol.

When I start a patrol, I chart my way to my patrol area, then SAVEGAME before I even get started. I also SAVEGAME as soon as I am in the clear and on the surface after every successful attack (just a safety in case the game CTDs, I don't lose my entire patrol). Very useful in case of a disaster! Also, when starting a new patrol after sustaining heavy damage, a wise skipper would make a number of test dives as soon as he makes open ocean. CRASH DIVE to 160', check the boat for soundness, then take it down, 10' at a time at 1/3 ahead, until you either get to your test depth, or the boat starts leaking. THEN you know your boat is safe.

well thanks to everyones help i came to realize i was very confused and incorrectly thinking i should be able to dock at any friendly port to get repairs.

i have been playing silent hunter for years but without a lot of spare time to play i only played the single missions so this campaign stuff is all new to me getting refitted and docking and all.

i finally figured it out that you can only get boat repairs and or end your patrols from pearl.

all other friendly ports just rearm and refuel your boat.

1 last question if you will - am i guessing correctly that any port you select to use as your home port would allow you to dock and make repairs the same way you do at pearl or is pearl the only repair dock?

Yes you can get full repairs at your HOME port no matter where it is.

And it should also be noted that your home port can change as the war progresses, too. Start out from Malaya at the beginning of the war, and it'll change to Java within a month or so, then out to Australia as Java gets overrun.

Makes you keep an eye on the gas tank, it does... you don't want to be low on fuel and then have your base change, making you out of fuel.

If more ports had ship yards with dry docks for major repair and if the game had that option it would be great. But of course dry dock would still end ones patrol because of the time required to repair the ship or boat.
