Should the SJ radar only reach out 5km?

Varying accounts and sources is why i haven't touched the surface radar much.

It's really line of sight limited.

The primary benefit being it can see in weather conditions (or night) when visual detection would not be possible. It gets a few hundred yards farther than eyes because the radar is likely a couple meters above the watch crew. It also might get a return off a mast or something that might be missed visually in marginal conditions.
